Controlled before-after intervention study of suburb-wide street changes to increase walking and cycling
While building on previous natural experiments, Te Ara Mua - Future Streets is unique in testing an intervention designed by the research team, community and transport investors together; including a wide range of objective outcome measures; and having an equity focus. When undertaking integrated intervention studies of this kind, a careful balance is needed between epidemiological imperatives, the constraints of transport funding and implementat…

Engaging with Involuntary Service Users in Social Work
The participation of service users in the planning and delivery of social work services has become a familiar objective in the UK. Policy injunctions, however, mask a lack of clarity around what is meant by terms such as ‘participation’ and ‘engagement’. Moreover, since many service users do not engage with social workers voluntarily, the expectation that they become centrally involved in the planning and delivery of services highlights tensions …

Novel Functional Association of Serine Palmitoyltransferase Subunit 1-A Peptide in Sphingolipid Metabolism with Cytochrome P4501A1 Transactivation and Proliferative Capacity of the Human Glioma LN18 B…
Some chemical modulators of cytochrome P4501A1, Cyp1A1, expression also perturb the activity of serine palmitoyltransferase, SPT, a heterodimeric protein responsible for catalyzing the first reaction in sphingolipid biosynthesis. The effect of altered SPT activity on Cyp1A1 expression has generally been attributed to changes in the composition of bioactive sphingolipids, generated downstream in the SPT metabolic pathway, but the precise mechanism…
Collaborative management of HIV infection in the community
Our hospital led a multidisciplinary community team to improve the quality of care delivered to HIV-infected clients utilizing a disease management approach in a US metropolitan community of 150,000 people. Community needs assessment and client and community surveys were used to define the problems. Patient care flowcharting and the creation of an electronic patient database facilitated patient tracking across the entire community. Clinical guide…

External vs. Mental Representations

Christ's Kingdom in Scotland
This article examines the response of Scottish Presbyterian reformers to the socioeconomic and political dimensions of the ‘Edwardian Crisis’. For such individuals the circumstances of the early twentieth century, despite the undoubted difficulties they posed, offered the opportunity to bring about a modern version of the ‘godly commonwealth’, with the principal means of realizing this being Christianized social reform. The article focuses on how…
La conscience en tant que métaphore spatiale
Consciousness as a spatial methaphor. The theory of Jaynes. This article presents the theory of consciousness proposed by Jaynes. According to this theory, reflexive consciousness is constituted by a metaphorical process : more precisely, it is an analogue metaphrand of the real world, where the metaphiers of visual perception and spatial relations are particularly important. One of the consequences of this theory is that it explains why consciou…

Un système cognitif sans neurones
John STEWART : Cognition without Neurones : Adaptation, Learning and Memory in the Immune System This paper proposes a definition of cognition as a system capable of both action and perception, in which the coupling of action and perception is such that the emergent behaviour of the system in its environment satisfies a meaningful constraint. The immune system of vertebrate animals reacts to nonself antigens by producing a specific immune respons…
