Introduction to the Special Issue on Urban Teacher Residencies
Despite the rapid expansion of and investment in urban residency programs, a key tenet of the residency model—that they prepare teachers for targeted urban settings—remains largely unexamined. Although some might argue that a “good teacher” can transcend contexts—we ask in this issue whether there may be particular features of the setting or context that are important for new teachers to learn about. In the papers in our special issue, the author…
Context as Content in Urban Teacher Education
Urban teacher residencies have emerged as an innovation for recruiting, preparing, and retaining teachers for high-need urban schools. Though residencies aim to prepare teachers for specific urban contexts, we know little about how context is conceptualized in the teacher education curriculum or what teachers learn about it. This study finds that participants in one residency in San Francisco came to see context as complex and layered, interrupti…
Unique Functional Abnormalities in Youth with Combined Marijuana Use and Depression
Prior research has shown a relationship between early onset marijuana (MJ) use and depression; however, this relationship is complex and poorly understood. Here, we utilized passive music listening and fMRI to examine functional brain activation to a rewarding stimulus in 75 participants [healthy controls (HC), patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), frequent MJ users, and the combination of MDD and MJ (MDD + MJ)]. For each participant, a …
Doubling the Cloak of (In)Competence in Client/Therapist Interactions
Cultural competence is used (often implicitly) to make decisions in human service settings. When therapists make decisions about whether or not a particular service will be offered, they place themselves in a position where their own competence can be judged. Using narrative data on independence and the elderly, we apply Edgerton's idea of the cloak of competence to demonstrate this doubling effect
Tourist Developers on Koh Samui, Thailand
Foreign investment in the tourist industry is usually thought of as the province of international companies. This study examines investment in tourism by expatriate westerners on Koh Samui, an island in southern Thailand. These small entrepreneurs are shown to be marginal, in many respects, to both Thai society and their own. Nevertheless, they enjoy some local acceptance based upon the interests of those in positions of power. The expatriates mu…

Capital Cost Allowances and Allocation Problems in an Estate or Trust
WT HETHER or not it is appropriate or even obligatory for an execuV tor or trustee to deduct an allowance for depreciation in computing amounts to be paid to an income beneficiary is a question that is not easy to answer at the present time. The Income Tax Act, with its deduction for capital cost allowances, has expanded the question to cover not only the proper recognition of depreciation for purposes of dividing gross income between income bene…
