Erika Vause. In the Red and in the Black
In recent years historians of the United States and Great Britain have been devoting more attention to the negative fallout from the increasing use of credit in their countries in the early nineteenth century. Erika Vause is one of the first American scholars to address similar issues in France. Her book In the Red and in the Black: Debt, Dishonor, and the Law in France between Revolutions focuses on efforts to reform two key components of France…
Asymmetric Forecast Densities for U.S. Macroeconomic Variables from a Gaussian Copula Model of Cross-Sectional and Serial Dependence
Most existing reduced-form macroeconomic multivariate time series models employ elliptical disturbances, so that the forecast densities produced are symmetric. In this article, we use a copula model with asymmetric margins to produce forecast densities with the scope for severe departures from symmetry. Empirical and skew t distributions are employed for the margins, and a high-dimensional Gaussian copula is used to jointly capture cross-sectiona…
From Amazon to Apple
In this study, we propose a multivariate stochastic model for Web site visit duration, page views, purchase incidence, and the sale amount for online retailers. The model is constructed by composition from carefully selected distributions and involves copula components. It allows for the strong nonlinear relationships between the sales and visit variables to be explored in detail, and can be used to construct sales predictions. The model is readi…

Evidence for a Prehistoric Petroglyph Map in Central Arizona
For the prehistoric petroglyphs of the southwestern United States, the search continues to correlate these symbols to geographic features, astronomical phenomena or human activity. In central Arizona, a serendipitous discovery of a panel of petroglyphs has led to a potential correlation between the abstract symbols and topographic and location information. This paper summarizes the location, design features and interpretation concerning these pet…

Modeling and Short-Term Forecasting of New South Wales Electricity System Load
This article employs Bayesian semiparametric regression methodology to model intraday electricity load data and obtain short-term load forecasts. The role of such forecasts in the New South Wales wholesale electricity market is discussed and the method applied to New South Wales system load data. The semiparametric regression model used identifies daily periodic, weekly periodic, and temperature-sensitive components of load. Each component is dec…
Against the Tide
About two hundred years ago, largely as a result of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, free trade achieved an intellectual status unrivaled by any other doctrine in the field of economics. What accounts for the success of free trade against then prevailing mecantilist doctrines? And how well has free trade withstood various theoretical attacks that have challenged it since Adam Smith's time? In this readable intellectual history, Douglas Irwin expla…
Putting France in the Chandlerian Framework
This article presents a new list of France's 100 largest publicly-held manufacturing firms in 1913 and compares them to the 100 largest American, British, and German firms identified by Alfred D. Chandler, Jr., in Scale and Scope . The largest French firms clustered in the same industries as the largest firms in the other countries. They were much smaller than their American counterparts, but in some industries they compared favorably with their …

French History in the College Curriculum
In 1989, as it had done eight years before, the Society for French His torical Studies mailed a questionnaire on French history courses to all its members.By December 1989, 126 professors at 105 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada had responded with information on 165 courses. These responses constitute a sample which, in its global characteristics, is quite similar to the sample gathered in 1981 (see table 1).1 Neither sampl…
