Translator respect for source text information structure
What is the translator’s impact on the information structure (IS) of causal expressions? This study proposes a description method for the internal IS of causal expressions with connectors and their translations. We implement Lambrecht’s view (1990) that IS relates to interlocutors’ ‘mental states’ and look upon information structuring as a cognitive patterning of linguistic elements with varying degrees of manifestness. These degrees are hypothes…
Introduction
In a very broad sense, verb classes can be defined as sets of verbs that share particular linguistic properties."Transitive" verbs, for instance, could be said to constitute a verb class on the basis of their shared grammatical property of being able to occur in transitive constructions. As such, this overarching property would encompass a very large set of verbal lexemes, which share the same general syntactic feature but may well form a quite he…
The syntactic flexibility of (new) verbs of instrument of communication
In this paper, the structural possibilities of well-established ‘verbs of instruments of communication’ (Levin 1993) such as telephone , fax and telegraph are compared with the syntactic possibilities of recent newcomers to the field such as skype and blackberry . The analysis, which is based on extensive web-based material shows that the structural possibilities of older members are more diverse than reported in previous studies, while the recen…
Crosslinguistic data as evidence in the grammaticalization debate
This article examines two case studies of cognate expressions in English and in French, which have developed partly in the same and partly in different directions. One case is the pair actually: actuellement, the other is the set in fact: en fait/de fait/au fait. Monolingual research on their present-day meanings and the study of their translation paradigms bring to light semantic and pragmatic overlap as well as differences between the members o…

Un nouveau regard sur les verbes «faibles»
De nombreux linguistes ont distingue un ensemble de verbes «faibles » en lui donnant des denominations variees: verbes parenthetiques, verbes epistemiques faibles, verbes evidentiels. Ces verbes se distinguent sur le plan syntaxique par un comportement specifique de rection faible (suivis d'une que P ou employes en incise) et sur le plan semantique par leur valeur modale epistemique, souvent decrite comme «faible » par rapport a un comportement s…
