  • On Making in the Digital Humanities

Julianne Nyhan, Geoffrey Rockwell et al.•BOOK•On Making in the Digital Humanities•2023

  • Tool criticism in practice. On methods, tools and aims of computational literary studies

Open Access•J Berenike Herrmann, Anne-Sophie Bories et al.•ARTICLE•Digital humanities quarterly•2023

This paper is a case-driven contribution to the discussion on the method-theory relationship in practices within the field of Computational Literary Studies (CLS). Progress in this field dedicated to the computational analysis of literary texts has long revolved around the new, digital tools: tools, as computational devices for analysis, have had here a comparatively strong status as research entities of their own, while their ontological status …

  • Tremendous Mechanical Labor

    Open Access•Geoffrey Rockwell, Stéfan Sinclair•ARTICLE•Digital humanities quarterly•2020

This paper looks at innovations in Busa’s Index Thomisticus project through the tension between mechanical and human labour. We propose that Busa and the IBM engineer Paul Tasman introduced two major innovations that allowed computers to process unstructured text. The first innovation was figuring out how represent unstructured text on punched cards, the way data was encoded and handled at that time. The second innovation was figuring out how to …

  • Repenser le numérique au 21ème siècle

    Open Access•Michael E Sinatra, Stéfan Sinclair•ARTICLE•Sens public•2015•References: 1

  • Abstraction and realism in the design of avatars for the simulated environment for theatre

Open Access•Stan Ruecker, Ali Grotkowski et al.•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2013

The Simulated Environment for Theatre (SET) is an experimental three-dimensional interface for use in blocking plays. Created using the Unity3D game engine, SET allows directors or student directors to associate character movement and speech with a timeline that represents the line of action, as well as to annotate choices, change the script, place viewpoints in the audience, and specify the scale-model stage and set. In this article, the authors…

  • Theory into Practice

Open Access•Stéfan Sinclair, Sean W Gouglas et al.•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2002

This article outlines the pedogogical imperatives and practical necessities that shaped the establishment of the new Master of Arts degree in Humanities Computing at the University of Alberta (Canada). Established as a graduate programme open to students across the Faculty of Arts, the programme provides a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary studies that combine the rigours of a traditional Liberal Arts education with hands-on experience in …

  • Subsymbolic Natural Language Processing

    Stéfan Sinclair, Risto Miikkulainen•ARTICLE•Language•1997

Risto Miikkulainen draws on recent connectionist work in language comprehension to create a model that can understand natural language. Using the DISCERN system as an example, he describes a general approach to building high-level cognitive models from distributed neural networks and shows how the special properties of such networks are useful in modeling human performance. In this approach connectionist networks are not only plausible models of …
