When the team’s jersey is what matters: Network analysis of party cohesion and structure in the Canadian House of Commons
Are parties “high discipline, low cohesion” in Westminster legislatures? This study applies network analysis to voting behavior among members of parliament (MPs), a novel approach that measures not deviation from party-line voting, but rather whether MPs with similar voting patterns are co-partisans. We study the Canadian Parliament from 2006 to 2015, during which time the governing party under Prime Minister Stephen Harper maintained tight centr…
Evidence and Interpretation in Language Learning Research: Opportunities for Collaboration With Computational Linguistics
This article discusses two types of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration between computational linguistics (CL) and language learning research. We target the connection between data and theory in second language (L2) research and highlight opportunities to (a) enrich the options for obtaining data and (b) support the identification and valid interpretation of relevant learner data. We first characterize options, limitations, and pote…
Detection of Annotation Errors in Corpora
This paper surveys methods for annotation error detection and correction. Methods can broadly be characterized as to whether they detect inconsistencies with respect to some statistical model based only on the corpus data or whether they detect inconsistencies with respect to a grammatical model, in general, some external information source. Two extended examples are presented, illustrating these different techniques: (1) the variation n ‐gram me…
