  • Ritual performance and the politics of identity: On the functions and uses of ritual

Jan Koster, Jan Anton Koster•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Pragmatics•2003•Cited by: 6•References: 14

The theory of ritual presented in this article is based on the notion of “territory.” Ritual performance encompasses a set of techniques to affect the identity of participants: away from individuality and by communal demarcation of a symbolic territorial model in space or time. The form of ritual is seen as autonomous, i.e. as relatively independent of meaning. As a set of identity-affecting techniques, the elements of ritual can be integrated in…

  • Transitive expletive constructions and the object shift parameter

    Open Access•Jan Koster, Jan-Wouter Zwart•ARTICLE•Linguistics in the Netherlands•2000

Existential expletive constructions featuring transitive verbs (buy) and unergative intransitive verbs (dance) (hence, transitive expletive constructions or TECs) are attested in a number of Germanic languages (Dutch, Frisian, German, Icelandic)

  • Long Distance Anaphora

Open Access•Eric J Reuland, Rijksuniversiteit te Groningen issuing body et al.•BOOK•Long Distance Anaphora•1991

There are a number of persistent anomalies in binding theory. One is the lack of an integrated view of long distance anaphora. Anaphors generally require an antecedent, but languages have been shown to show striking differences as to where such antecedents may occur. This volume is a collection of original articles by distinguished contributors on the nature of anaphoric systems in a wide variety of genetically and structurally different language…

  • What can we learn from children's errors in understanding anaphora

Open Access•Werner Deutsch, Charlotte Koster et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1986•Cited by: 3

Sur des enfants neerlandais de six a dix ans, les AA. montrent une acquisition plus rapide des anaphoriques reflechis que des non reflechis, ce qui suggererait une explication en termes configurationnels

  • Levels of Syntactic Representation

Donna Jo Napoli, Robert May et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1984

  • On the Constituency of Infinitives

Jan Koster, Robert May•ARTICLE•Language•1982•Cited by: 8

Two sorts of analyses have been proposed for the constituent structure of the infinitival complements found in sentences like John tried to leave and John appeared to leave. One analysis maintains that such ‘bare’ infinitives are sentential, the superficially absent complementizer and subject being represented by lexically empty categories. The alternative holds that they are a type of verb phrase complement, represented as they appear superficia…
