Structural Propensities: Translating nominal word groups from English into German
This book focuses on the translation of English academic texts into German, closely analysing the structural and discourse properties of original sentences and their possible translations. It consists of six chapters, with more than a hundred carefully discussed examples, and presents the author’s results of a series of research projects which have successively dealt with the typologically determined conditions for discourse-appropriate uses of w…

Parametrized Beginnings of Sentences in English and German
Translational evidence from popular-scientific texts shows that about every second sentence of the German translations does not begin in the same way as the English originals although the sentences are subject to the same discourse conditions and although in many cases analogous beginnings are not excluded for linguistic reasons. The differences concern word order and perspective, i.e., active, passive and passive-like structures, but also struct…
Discourse relators and the beginnings of sentences in English and German
Felicitous translations between English and German show that discourse relators like adversative connectors interact with the basic strategies of discourse linking superimposed upon the grammatical rules of word order. For initial position they compete with elements from the propositional meaning of a sentence, which they precede if the propositional elements are given information; if the elements are new (or resumed) information, discourse relat…
Cleft-like sentences
Comparing translations of certain copular sentences with dummy subjects, the present paper demonstrates different preferences in English and German, interpreting them as yet another case of the alternative perspective of a more configurational language (English) versus a less configurational language (German). Like clefts, these sentences compensate for the tighter constraints of English on topicalization and adverbial modification by using refer…
Discourse functions and language-specific conditions for the use of cleft(-like) sentences: A Prelude
Sprachspezifische Aspekte der Informationsverteilung
Passive perspectives; different preferences in English and German: A Result of Parameterized Processing
