  • Facilitation and Interference from Partners During the Transition to Parenthood

    Open Access•Roi Estlein, J A Thei et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Communication•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Drawing on foundational assumptions of relational turbulence theory, this study identified the ways romantic partners facilitate or interfere with individual goals and routines during the transition to parenthood and analyzed how categories of facilitation and interference co-occur within individuals and between partners over time. A thematic analysis of data from a longitudinal study of 78 couples at four points during the transition to parentho…

  • Users’ Sense of Empowerment, Communicative Behavior, and Public Engagement on Instagram

Open Access•Zulfia Zaher, Tisha Dejmanee et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2023

BlackoutTuesday was a digital action devised as part of the unprecedentedly large Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. This study builds on Black Lives Matter research through its three main objectives: To test three new independent variables — race, gender, and source — in determining the demonstration of users’ empowerment; to test race, gender, and source to determine users’ communicative behavior on Instagram; and, to investigate the connecti…

  • What we said and what I wish we said

    Kirsten M Weber, Kirsten Weber et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Research indicates that final conversations with dying loved ones are significant but challenging relational events for survivors. Using a qualitative theme analysis, the present study documented survivors' ( N = 44) retrospective reports of experiences of regret during final conversations. The analysis revealed experiences of validation regret, intersubjective regret, and encumbrance regret, and the use of regret management techniques. This know…

  • Aboriginallivesmatter

    Open Access•Tisha Dejmanee, Jeffrey Millar et al.•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 23

This paper explores the hashtag #AboriginalLivesMatter on Instagram which was widely used in Australia as part of a global Black Lives Matter (BLM) response in 2020. We map the participants and themes of #AboriginalLivesMatter through the quantitative coding and qualitative thematic analysis of 603 Instagram posts published with this hashtag in June 2020. We find that this conversation is largely driven by celebrities and non-Indigenous participa…

  • Etiology of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in a Large Cohort of Children

Open Access•Christina T Rüsch, Ursula Knirsch et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

    (1) Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a compressive mononeuropathy of the median nerve at the wrist, is rare in childhood and occurs most frequently due to secondary causes. (2) Methods: Medical history, electrodiagnostic findings, and imaging data of patients with CTS from two pediatric neuromuscular centers were analyzed retrospectively. The etiology of CTS was investigated and compared with the literature. (3) Results: We report on a c…

  • Primed From the Start

    Open Access•Kirsten Weber, Morten H Christiansen et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2019•References: 56

New linguistic information must be integrated into our existing language system. Using a novel experimental task that incorporates a syntactic priming paradigm into artificial language learning, we investigated how new grammatical regularities and words are learned. This innovation allowed us to control the language input the learner received, while the syntactic priming paradigm provided insight into the nature of the underlying syntactic proces…

  • Disclosures of Cystic Fibrosis-Related Information to Romantic Partners

    Open Access•Katie Broekema, Kirsten M Weber et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 41

In this article, we offer insights into how individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) share information about their disease with a romantic partner. Using communication privacy management as a sensitizing theoretical construct, four themes emerged following 13 qualitative interviews with persons with CF. Themes about sharing CF-related information with a romantic partner include weighing the risks and benefits of sharing information, the role of heal…

  • A longitudinal assessment of relationship characteristics that predict new parents' relationship satisfaction

    Open Access•J A Thei, Roi Estlein et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2012

Drawing on the relational turbulence model, this study queries whether it is the amount of relational uncertainty and partner interference in a relationship, or the magnitude of an increase in these mechanisms over time, that accounts for decreased relationship satisfaction for new parents. To test these competing hypotheses, a longitudinal study of 78 couples was conducted in which both partners completed surveys about their relationship at 4 ti…

  • The Relationship Between the Perceived and Actual Effectiveness of Persuasive Messages

Open Access•James Price Dillard, Kirsten M Weber et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2007

Although measures of perceived message effectiveness are commonly employed in formative evaluation research, the validity of such measures has been assumed rather than demonstrated. A meta-analysis revealed a corrected-for-attenuation correlation of.41 between perceived effectiveness (PE) and attitude (k= 40). This association was apparently subject to the influence of moderator variables, although the pattern of influence was unstable across dif…
