  • AI for slogans

    Open Access•László Kovács, Luca Kovacs•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2026

Slogans play a central role in branding: they contribute to brand image and are primary touching points between brands and consumers. Slogan generation is not easy because slogans need not only to be in touch with the brand, but they also need to be memorable, catchy, and overall appealing. New technologies, however, such as Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT), by different AI platforms, may help in slogan generation. Although AI is researc…

  • Intelligent tutoring in dynamic domains

    Open Access•László Csépányi-Fürjes, László Kovács•ARTICLE•Educational Technology Research…•2026

This study presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of an intelligent tutoring system tailored for dynamic learning domains such as computer science. The objective was to create a system that adapts not only to rapidly changing curricula, but also to diverse learner trajectories and self-regulated learning behaviors. The proposed system is built on the Evolving Knowledge Space Graph model, a graph-based knowledge representation framewo…

  • Sound symbolism in size perception

Open Access•László Kovács, Renáta Németh et al.•ARTICLE•Eesti ja soome-ugri keeleteaduse…•2026

Sound symbolism – the systematic association between phonetic properties and meaning – plays a prominent role in size ratings, where particular speech sounds shape perceptions of magnitude. This paper explores two previously understudied dimensions of size-sound symbolism: (1) the impact of child-directed speech (CDS) on size judgments, and (2) the alignment between participants’ self-reported and actual rating strategies. The first section provi…

  • Geographical space and service use in agriculture

    Open Access•László Kovács, Viktória Szőke•ARTICLE•Hungarian Geographical Bulletin•2025

Location theory has shown that the location of businesses follows specific patterns: primarily, the site of production, transportation costs, markets, and workforce are considered the main factors influencing business location. However, less research focuses on the spatial distribution of service use of actual businesses. Based on empirical data collected in the Hungarian counties Vas and Zala, the paper shows how the service use of agricultural …

  • Christian anthropology‐based contributions to the ethics of socially assistive robots in care for older adults

Open Access•Chris Gastmans, Edoardo Sinibaldi et al.•ARTICLE•Bioethics•2024

Our society, in general, and health care, in particular, faces notable challenges due to the emergence of innovative digital technologies. The use of socially assistive robots in aged care is a particular digital application that provokes ethical reflection. The answers we give to the ethical questions associated with socially assistive robots are framed by ontological and anthropological considerations of what constitutes human beings and how th…

  • Often Overlooked Aspects of Sound Symbolism

Open Access•László Kovács, Renáta Németh et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2024•References: 48

Sound symbolism is a non-arbitrary mapping between phonetic properties and meanings. The existence and nature of sound symbolism have long been the subject of empirical research. It is rarely recognized, however, that participants’ intrinsic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, language knowledge), in addition to the commonly studied phonetic features, may also influence size ratings. Our study aims to empirically investigate the impact of partici…

  • A Beemer, Queen Elizabeth and The Steaming Elephant – a comprehensive overview of vehicle names

    Open Access•László Kovács•ARTICLE•Onomastica•2023

Although names of vehicles surround us in our everyday life, vehicle names are seldom subject to research in onomastic literature: in most cases, the research only describes the naming patterns of one vehicle category. This paper aims to review the notion ‘vehicle names’ in light of the onomastic literature to provide a comprehensive overview of the name category. The paper takes the literature review as its research method: vehicle name-related …

  • Growing Networks – Modelling the Growth of Word Association Networks for Hungarian and English

Open Access•László Kovács, Katalin Orosz et al.•ARTICLE•Investigationes Linguisticae•2021

In the new era of information and communication technology, the representation of information is of increasing importance. Knowing how words are connected to each other in the mind and what processes facilitate the creation of connections could result in better optimized applications, e.g. in computer aided education or in search engines. This paper models the growth process of a word association database with an algorithm. We present the network…

  • Networks in the mind – what communities reveal about the structure of the lexicon

Open Access•László Kovács, András Bóta et al.•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2021

The mental lexicon stores words and information about words. The lexicon is seen by many researchers as a network, where lexical units are nodes and the different links between the units are connections. Based on the analysis of a word association network, in this article we show that different kinds of associative connections exist in the mental lexicon. Our analysis is based on a word association database from the agglutinative language Hungari…

  • The sound of size revisited - New insights from a German-Hungarian comparative study on sound symbolism

    Open Access•Hilke Elsen, Renáta Németh et al.•ARTICLE•Language Sciences•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 41

Languages consistently display sound symbolic effects. In our study we expand size-related sound symbolic research to German and Hungarian, languages with both rounded and unrounded high front vowels as well as/ø/, so that we can separate the effect of lip rounding and vowel backness. Our subjects had to rate artificial words with CVCVCV structure. For analysis we used crossed random effect models in a way that is novel in this field. Results con…

  • Applications of Metaheuristics in Insurance

    Open Access•László Kovács•ARTICLE•Society and Economy•2019

When calculating different profitability measures for a life insurance company, one of the most important parameters to know is the probability of a policy being in force at any given time after the start of risk bearing. These probabilities are given by the survival function. In this paper, we examine data from a Hungarian insurance company, in order to build models for the survival functions of two life insurance products. For survival function…
