  • AI-based behaviour analysis in prisons

Open Access•Robert Rothmann, Elisabeth Mayer•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2026

The present study addresses current developments in the field of AI-based surveillance to prevent violence and suicide in prisons. In doing so, we draw on research activities and pilot tests recently conducted in Austrian detention facilities. After providing an overview on the current state of art, the specific technical approach of the project is explained, and its implementation in selected penal institutions is described. The AI system and it…

  • Pronombres clíticos y género en español en contacto con shipibo-konibo, asháninka y ashéninka del Perené

Open Access•Liliana Sánchez, Elisabeth Mayer et al.•ARTICLE•Letras (Lima•2025

This article presents an overview of previous studies on the direct object pronominal system of Spanish in contact with Shipibo-konibo, Asháninka, and Perené Ashéninka. Evidence shows the acquisition of proclitic pronouns in all varieties in contact examined. It also shows a preference for the use of the pronoun le, and in the specific case of Spanish in contact with Shipibo-konibo, data indicate a certain level of gender neutralization evident i…

  • Social media as a means of visual biographical performance and biographical work

    Open Access•Roswitha Breckner, Elisabeth Mayer•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 20

With the rise of social media, forms of communication emerge that are increasingly defined by the use of images. From the perspective of biographical research and visual sociology, the article addresses the question in how far biographical work becomes visible while visual biographies are formed in digitalized visual communication. It proposes a way how these processes can be studied with interpretive biographical and visual methodologies. Based …

  • Gender Agreement in a Language Contact Situation

Open Access•Liliana Sánchez, Jocelyn Camacho et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2022•References: 35

Gender agreement between determiners and nouns, and gender agreement between third-person clitics and their referents, are notoriously difficult to acquire by bilingual speakers who lack them in their first language, or in one of their first languages. We present a study that explores the differences between gender agreement between a determiner and a noun and gender agreement between clitics and antecedents or doubled DPs among Shipibo-Spanish s…

  • Feature variability in the bilingual-monolingual continuum

Elisabeth Mayer, Liliana Sánchez•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Direct object clitics in Latin American Spanish are subject to great variability in features across dialects. Variability also characterizes bilingual acquisition and especially clitic doubling structures in language contact contexts. We focus on the distribution of clitics and Differential Object Marking (DOM) in clitic doubling structures among Shipibo-Spanish bilinguals, Quechua-Spanish bilinguals, and monolingual speakers of Spanish in contac…

  • Linguistic attitudes toward Shipibo in Cantagallo

Open Access•Liliana Sánchez, Elisabeth Mayer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Aims and objectives: This study aims to explore language attitudes among speakers of Shipibo, an Amazonian indigenous language from the Panoan family, in the community of Cantagallo in the city of Lima, an urban, Spanish-dominant environment. The study is motivated by the paucity of studies on language attitudes in urban indigenous communities. The Cantagallo Shipibo community was settled in the early 2000s and temporarily relocated in 2017. Meth…

  • Typological Differences in Morphological Patterns, Gender Features, and Thematic Structure in the L2 Acquisition of Ashaninka Spanish

    Open Access•Liliana Sánchez, Elisabeth Mayer•ARTICLE•Languages•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 31

It has been widely argued that morphological competence, particularly functional morphology, represents the bottleneck of second language acquisition (Jensen et al. 2017; Lardiere 1998, 2005; Slabakova 2008, 2009, 2013). In this study, we explore three challenging aspects of the morphology of Spanish among advanced L1 Ashaninka-L2 Spanish speakers: (i) the acquisition of proclitics and enclitics with inflected verbs; (ii) the distribution of accu…

The Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO) started in 2008 in only two locations and has since grown to a nationwide competition with almost 1500 high school students participating in 2013. An Australian team has participated in the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) every year since 2009. This paper describes how the competition is run (with a regional first round and a final national round) and the organisation of the c…

  • Floating Agreement in American Spanish Leísta Dialects

    Elisabeth Mayer•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Linguistics•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this paper I link ‘floating features’ in clitic clusters with two third-person participants to a split object marking system, indicative of a language change in progress. Both clitics are undergoing concurrent reanalysis processes affecting them differentially, i.e. they are located at different stages in the process. Whereas standard varieties draw a clear distinction between direct and indirect object, American Spanish Leísta dialects move t…
