Peer Scaffolding Patterns Across Group Engagement Levels in L2 Collaborative Process Writing
Peer scaffolding is a key to the success of second language (L2) collaborative writing. Despite growing research interest in this area, studies focusing on its application among learners with varying levels of engagement are still scarce. This study investigated what strategies and how Chinese EFL learners employ peer scaffolding strategies in relation to group engagement during a collaborative process writing task, as well as their perceptions o…

L2 interpretation of quantifier scope
This study investigated L2 learners’ interpretation of quantifier scope, focusing on the influence of individual differences, including L2 proficiency, working memory (WM) and inhibitory control (IC). A picture selection task using the covered-box paradigm (CBP) was conducted with 70 Chinese-speaking learners of English and a control group of 40 native English speakers. The results revealed that inverse scope (IS) posed particular challenges for …
On the Acquisition of English Complex Predicates and Complex Word Formation
Languages vary in their availability of productive endocentric bare-stem compounds (e.g., flower hat) and a range of complex predicates (separable verb-particles, double object datives, adjectival resultatives, put-locatives, make-causatives, and perceptual reports). To account for these cross-linguistic variations, two parameters have been proposed: the Compounding Parameter (TCP), which governs the formation of bare-stem compounds, separable ve…
Specifier-to-head reanalysis
Mandarin numeral phrases display two characteristics. First, the numeral yi ‘one’ differs from other numerals in many respects. Second, classifiers can appear without any overt numerals, resulting in Cl-N phrases (e.g., ben shu ‘one book’): Cl-N phrases, like numeral phrases with yi ‘one’ (e.g., yi-ben shu ‘one book’), always denote singularity, but also contrast with numeral phrases with yi ‘one’ in various respects like scope. Although some of …
The Dimensions and Dynamism of Group Engagement in Computer-Mediated Collaborative Writing in EFL Classes
Student engagement as an important predictor of peer interaction and academic achievement has received considerable attention in second language classes. Despite its significance, how study groups engage in online writing activities in collaborative learning settings remains underexplored. To fill this gap, the present study explored how a group of four engaged in an 8-week computer-mediated collaborative writing (CMCW) project in a Chinese unive…
Effects of Processing Limits on Computing Scalar Implicatures
Relatively late mastery of scalar implicatures has been suggested to correlate with children’s immature processing capacities, such as their limited working memory. Yet, many studies that tested for a link between children’s working memory and their computation of scalar implicatures have failed to find any correlation. One possible reason is that the children in these studies showed little individual variation in computing scalar implicatures. T…
Effects of Banxia Xiexin Decoction on apoptosis of interstitial cells of Cajal via regulation of MiR-451-5p
Through this study, we demonstrated that BXD could promote ICCs proliferation and inhibit apoptosis via miR-451-5p and may involve the modulations of SCF/c-kit signaling, thus suggesting a new therapy basis for GI motility dysfunction from the perspective of modulation of ICCs apoptosis by targeting miR-451-5p
Acquisition of English adjectival resultatives
Two distinctive types of complex predicates found in English are separable verb-particle combinations (“particles”) and adjectival resultatives (“ARs”). Snyder ties both to the positive setting of the Compounding Parameter (“TCP”). This predicts that during the acquisition of a [+TCP] language, any child who has acquired ARs or particles will also permit “creative” bare-stem, endocentric compounding. Existing support comes from children acquiring…
Family social class as a predictor of college students' career decisionmaking self-efficacy
Career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) is important for college students' choice of career, especially during the current period of global economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated the predictive effect of family social class on the CDMSE of college students. Participants were 838 college students from China, who completed measures of subjective socioeconomic status, self-esteem, belief in a just world, and CDMSE. T…
Cultural Translation in Green Book
Cultural translation is a very hot topic among academic circle in China. Research on cultural translation has dramatically increased after 2006, and reached a peak in the recent five years. However, most studies are still confined to the linguistic level, starting from translation studies and focusing on the translation of culture embedded words. Thus, integrating cultural studies with translation in order to improve intercultural communication n…
Left behind in perception of air pollution? A hidden form of spatial injustice in China
In recent years, the smog problem has aroused wide concern in China. However, people have different perceptions of the severity of air pollution, even in similarly polluted environments. Based on a quantitative analysis of Chinese General Social Survey data, air quality index data, news reports in 2013, and multi-site anthropological observations, this paper demonstrates that the public perception of air pollution is not determined by physiologic…
