  • Association with Ambient Air Pollutants and School Absence Due to Sickness in Schoolchildren: A Case-Crossover Study in a Provincial Town of Japan

Open Access•Masanari Watanabe, Hisashi Noma et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The effect of ambient air pollutants and Asian dust (AD) on absence from school due to sickness has not been well researched. By conducting a case-crossover study, this study investigated the influence of ambient air pollutants and desert sand dust particles from East Asia on absence from school due to sickness. From November 2016 to July 2018, the daily cases of absence due to sickness were recorded in five elementary schools in Matsue, Japan. D…

  • New Radiocarbon Evidence for Human Occupation in Central Argentina During the Middle and Late Holocene: The Ongamira Valley Case

    Open Access•Andrés D Izeta, Roxana Cattáneo et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 27

The Ongamira Valley (Córdoba, Argentina) shows a persistent occupational history of its territory. Even one of the first Argentinian radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates was calculated in this valley; for 70 years, the chronology was based on relative dates (stratigraphy and its cultural content). For this reason, since 2010 a 14 C dating program has been developed focusing on the chronology of eight of the 60 sites identified so far for the valley. This wo…

  • Association of Sand Dust Particles with Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Symptoms in Adult Patients with Asthma in Western Japan Using Light Detection and Ranging: A Panel Study

Open Access•Masanari Watanabe, Hisashi Noma et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) can estimate daily volumes of sand dust particles from the East Asian desert to Japan. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between sand dust particles and pulmonary function, and respiratory symptoms in adult patients with asthma. One hundred thirty-seven patients were included in the study. From March 2013 to May 2013, the patients measured their morning peak expiratory flow (PEF) a…

  • Verification of the Cosmic-Ray Event in AD 993–994 by Using a Japanese Hinoki Tree

Open Access•Fusa Miyake, Kimiaki Masuda et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Cited by: 12•References: 9

A rapid yearly increase in the radiocarbon content has been detected for the period from AD 993 to 994. However, this event is supported by the 14 C measurements of only one cedar tree sample, and verification is necessary to confirm this event more reliably. For this purpose, this study measured the 14 C content in Japanese Hinoki tree rings corresponding to the period from AD 988 to 997 using the accelerator mass spectrometry system at Yamagata…

  • Automated Sample Combustion and CO 2 Collection System with IRMS for 14 C AMS in Yamagata University, Japan

Open Access•Kazuhiro Kato, Fuyuki Tokanai et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was introduced at Yamagata University in 2010, including the measurement of radiocarbon. In the Yamagata University laboratory (YU-AMS), the application of 14 C AMS is aimed at microdose pharmacokinetics investigation and the development of improved sample preparation techniques. The lab also measures environmental samples. With the installation of this AMS system, a new automated sample production system was i…

  • Assessing the Chronology and Rewrapping of Funerary Bundles at the Prehispanic Religious Center of Pachacamac, Peru

    Open Access•Mai K Takigami, Mai Takigami et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 40

Over 30 funerary bundles were excavated in 2005 from a large chamber tomb at the prehispanic religious center of Pachacamac on the central coast of Peru. The largest and most elaborate bundle was found in the innermost part of the tomb, tightly surrounded by other bundles. We hypothesized that this bundle contained the deceased leader of a social group whose members collectively cared for their ancestor's bundle (for example, by rewrapping it) an…

  • Measuring 14 C Concentration in Wine to Monitor Global Distribution of 14 C

Open Access•Hirohisa Sakurai, Saori Namai et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•References: 12

Using liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), radiocarbon concentrations were measured for wine from 8 wineries located in 7 countries in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The 14 C concentrations of ethanol and residual materials in the wine were correlated (correlation coefficient 0.82). The δ 14 C measurements of wine samples from the mid-latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere were approximately 1l% lower…

  • Present Status of YU-AMS System

Open Access•Fuyuki Tokanai, Kazuhiro Kato et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 14

A new compact accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system has been installed in the Kaminoyama Research Institute at Yamagata University (YU). The AMS system is based on a 0.5MV Pelletron accelerator developed by the National Electrostatics Corporation. An automated acid-alkali-acid (AAA) treatment system and an automated graphitization line were also installed in the same facility for sample preparation. Performance tests of the YU-AMS system wer…

  • Latest 14 C Concentrations of Plant Leaves at High Altitudes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres: Vertical Stability of Local Suess Effect

Open Access•Hirohisa Sakurai, Fuyuki Tokanai et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 10

The radiocarbon concentrations in plant leaves from different altitudes at 3 sampling locations were measured with the new compact accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) at Yamagata University to investigate air mixing on a global scale. The sampling locations are Yamagata in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere (NH), Kenya in the equatorial region (EQ), and Chacaltaya in the Southern Hemisphere (SH). The 14 C concentrations of the plant lea…

  • Comparison of Depth Profiles of 129 I and 14 C Concentration in the Surface Layer of Soils Collected from Northeastern Japan

Open Access•Hiroyuki Matsuzaki, Yoko Sunohara Tsuchiya et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•References: 9

129 I/ 127 I and 14 C/ 12 C depth profiles were compared for the surface 30-cm layer of soil samples (Andisols) collected from Shimokita Peninsula, northeastern Japan, in November 2005. The 129 I/ 127 I and 14 C/ 12 C profiles have a clear correlation, even taking into account that the data include samples collected from different sites with different surface histories. These results, and considering that 14 C/ 12 C can be regarded as a proxy of …
