Like magazines – but different! Fanzines as bricolaged media
This article is an English translation of a chapter originally published in 2017 by zine scholar Christian Schmidt (†), written as part of an edited volume examining the outcomes of a research project on youth cultures and bricolage. In this contribution, Schmidt offers a critical introduction to the fanzine as a distinct medium. He challenges definitions that position fanzines primarily as oppositional and utopian, arguing instead that such char…
Barriers to plastic monitoring in freshwaters in the Global South
Plastics in freshwaters are a major problem for socio-ecological systems, calling upon smart policies for its solution. At the same time, there is a lack of relevant monitoring data on plastics in freshwaters to design such policies, specifically in the so-called Global South. This study, therefore, aims to analyze the complex barriers to mo-nitoring plastics in freshwaters in example cases of the Global South, as a starting point for more tailor…
Valuation of sector‐switching and politicization in the governance of corporatized public services
Corporatization has great potential for public service provision, but governments face severe challenges in recruiting executive directors (EDs) with relevant human capital. Debates arise about the roles of sector‐switching and politicization in public corporation governance, but a critical research gap exists. ED pay (EDP) is a crucial governance factor and signifies the valuation of ED human capital. This study links debates on sector‐switching…
Introduction: Axel Honneth's 'The Working Sovereign
In his 2021 Walter Benjamin Lectures, Axel Honneth questioned the displacement of work from the center of contemporary political theories. This special issue collects an interview with Axel Honneth on central theses of his lectures and a number of commentaries that discuss issues like Honneth's extended definition of work, his inclusion of long neglected care activities in the definition of work, the requirements for non-detrimental, meaningful w…
What we may expect from work
In his critique of contemporary working conditions, Axel Honneth rejects Marx's concept of alienation for three main reasons: (1) The concept is allegedly tied to industrial labor as the standard model of work. (2) The ideal of unalienated labor seems to be too demanding in its aspiration to the full development of all human potential. (3) The level of analysis is so fundamental that the critique loses the 'ends in view,' that is, the feasible al…
Japanese neologisms in Chinese
Japanese loanwords in Chinese are currently not accepted as legitimate loanwords in the general loanword framework (Haspelmath and Tadmor, 2009a), mainly because they are considered to be graphic loans (Masini, 1997; Tranter, 2009) and not sound-meaning borrowings. This paper formulates a counterargument, developed mainly from the perspective of the Chinese scholarship: it focuses on how graphemic borrowing impacts the judgment of loanwordness an…

Perceived Access to Health Care Services and Relevance of Telemedicine during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Germany
During the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, non-pharmaceutical interventions were imposed to contain the spread of the virus. Based on cross-sectional waves in March, July and December 2020 of the COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring (COSMO), the present study investigated the impact of the introduced measures on the perceived access to health care. Additionally, for the wave in December, treatment occasion as well as utilization and satisfaction regarding …
Personnel governance of corporatized public services: Effects of executive resources and corporation forms on turnover
Corporatization has potentials for public service provision but also induces far‐reaching governance challenges. Appointing executives for public corporations is a powerful personnel governance mechanism for public authorities to manage public service provision and resource dependencies. However, the theoretical understanding of executive turnover is limited. Drawing on resource dependence theory and embedding publicness fit perspectives, Cox reg…
Understanding self‐regulation for political control and policymaking: Effects of governance mechanisms on accountability
Self‐regulation has become a crucial governance mechanism for policymaking and political control. Although governments have increasingly implemented self‐regulation, its effects are under‐researched. International policymakers highlight the role of self‐regulation in extending accountability and political control of state‐owned enterprises (SOEs). A key accountability area—attracting widespread public interest—is the level of executive directors'…
Lexicography for loanwords and words with special orthography: Loanwords in Modern Standard Chinese
Loanwords in Modern Standard Chinese have attracted increasing attention in recent years. We try to unravel the complexity that stems from the properties of the Chinese writing system itself, its variant systems (Japanese Kanji), the rich history of the Chinese lexicon, and its interactions with neighboring languages. We argue that the status of a loanword is not binary, but rather dynamic on a developmental continuum, due to the various intentio…
Export of Plastic Debris by Rivers into the Sea
A substantial fraction of marine plastic debris originates from land-based sources and rivers potentially act as a major transport pathway for all sizes of plastic debris. We analyzed a global compilation of data on plastic debris in the water column across a wide range of river sizes. Plastic debris loads, both microplastic (particles 5 mm) are positively related to the mismanaged plastic waste (MMPW) generated in the river catchments. This rela…
Optimal Commuting and Migration Decisions under Commuting Cost Uncertainty
The aim of this paper is to assess the implications of economic uncertainty on individual mobility behaviour at the local and regional levels. Focusing especially on uncertainty with respect to the evolution of commuting costs, a model is developed that describes the interrelated decisions of residential choice and the appropriate type of mobility connecting workplace and residence. Results indicate that higher uncertainty about commuting costs i…
First Records of the Arctic Moth Gynaephora groenlandica (Wocke) South of the Arctic Circle: A New Alpine Subspecies
Two adjacent populations of the Arctic moth Gynaephora groenlandica, a High Arctic endemic species, were found in southwest Yukon, ca. 900 km south of the species’ described distribution. Species identification was based on larval morphology for one population and on larvae rearing and DNA barcoding for the other. All three approaches clearly separated G. groenlandica from the closely related and frequently sympatric G. rossii. These records repr…

Basking in projected glory: The role of subjective temporal distance in future self‐appraisal
We examined the role of subjective temporal distance in people's future self‐predictions. Consistent with temporal self‐appraisal theory, we hypothesized that people would be motivated to evaluate future selves more favorably when they felt closer in time, because subjectively close future selves have more direct implications for current identity than do subjectively distant future selves. Subjective temporal distance of a future self was manipul…

The modern understanding of autonomy (at least in its strong version) often includes the idea of selflegislation. As was paradigmatically the case for the French Revolution, self-legislation was considered as ideally neither bound by tradition nor by existing institutions. But some contemporary political theorists of the bourgeois revolutions (including Hobbes and Burke) felt uneasy about the loss of order and therefore tried to dispense with the…

Machinery, Intelligence and Our Intentionality. Grounds for Establishing Paradoxical Discourses
Attaching the robotic body to the artificial brain (the computer) is a poor way of going about constructing autonomous mentality. It represents nothing more than an extension of the brain and succumbs to using experience as a confirmation of the scientist's belief that he may speak in artificial terms of mind of mentality. This naturally leads to producing a paradoxical discourse on the subject of robotics and thereby leads to confusion. The auth…

Game Theory and International Relations: Preferences, Information and Empirical Evidence
At the cutting edge of current modelling in international relations using non-cooperative game theory, this collection of original contributions from political scientists and economists explores some of the fundamental assumptions of game theory modelling. It includes a theory of game payoff formation, a theory of preference aggregation, thorough discussions of the effects of interdependence between preferences upon various game structures, in-de…

A Topical Note on Accessing Scientific Refinement
Intellectual affinities are intertwined with community feeling. In an Era of E-everything, communities as we once knew them have been split up and remade in a virtual manner. With their uses of the Internet for promoting Science, institutions of higher education have pushed reflections about multi-person activities out of the framework of the Information Society and into that of the Knowledge Community – computer-mediated scientific research and …
