  • Flat Sphere and Tetraconic Perspective

    Kenneth R Adams•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1983

  • A Giacometti Portrait

    Kenneth R Adams, James Lord•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1982

When we look at a painting hanging on an art gallery wall, we see only what the artist has chosen to disclose--the finished work of art. What remains mysterious the process of creation itself--the making of the work of art. Everyone who has looked at paintings has wondered about this, and numerous efforts have been made to discover and depict the creative method of important artists. Giacometti Portrait is a picture of one of the century's greate…

  • A Comparative Commentary on Nine of My Sculptures

    Kenneth R Adams•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1979

A procedure developed by George Kelly is demonstrated in a commentary by the author and another sculptor, David Annesley, on sculptures made by the author. The procedure has the merit of repeatedly bringing the commentators’ attention back to particular works, placing them each time in a fresh context, so as to avoid premature generalisations about them. The commentary is followed by a summary giving their assessment of the distinctive and shared…

  • Constructions Based on Curved Perspective

Kenneth R Adams, Alan Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1977

  • Tetraconic Perspective for a Complete Sphere of Vision

    Kenneth R Adams•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1976

I have made a study of perspective since 1957 and two reports giving some of its results have been published in Leonardo [1, 2]. In this note, I discuss what I believe is a new kind of perspective, tetraconic perspective, that provides simultaneously a view of all that can be seen in all directions from a point in space (say the spatial centre of a room). Fig. 1 shows four views (an infinite number is possible) of a cubical room in tetraconic per…

  • Right and Left: Essays on Dual Symbolic Classification

    Kenneth R Adams, Rodney Needham•REVIEW•Leonardo•1976

  • Cezanne and the Average Effect of Foreshortening on Shape

    Kenneth R Adams•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1975

Curves are either flattened or sharpened when they are foreshortened in perspective. The two kinds of foreshortening seem to be perceived differently. The author argues that in some respects we see the world flatter than it is, and that, for example, Cézanne’s and Mondrian’s figurative paintings reflect this fact

  • Perspective and the Viewpoint

    Kenneth R Adams•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1972

Geometrical perspective can provide a precise set of rules for the interpretation of a pattern of marks on a plane as a pattern of things in space. A viewer whose vision conforms to these rules will be highly responsive to the picture plane relative to his exact viewpoint. In the first part of the paper, the author examines in detail the responses of a hypothetical viewer sensitive only to the cues of geometrical perspective. In the second half h…
