  • The pragmatism of drawing context networks

    Open Access•Danny Butt, A Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2021

Linguistics has embraced the functional and contextual turn but, when building tools for systematic contextual description, we have not made as much use as we could of our own functional traditions. Rather, we have largely relied on the metaphors of law and rule, which do not adequately capture tensions between consistency and variability in how language and context relate to each other. Our aim in this paper is to show the economy and practicali…

  • Epistemic stance in the translations of Chinese medicine classics

Yan Yue, Canzhong Wu•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2021

This article is a contrastive study of epistemic stance in the English translations of the Chinese medical classic Huang Di Nei Jing by clinicians and non-clinicians. Epistemic stance is concerned with a translator’s certainty about the proposition of a statement and is highly consequential to information validity. By drawing on the systemic functional linguistic framework and using two sets of translations of the Chinese medicine classic, Huang …

  • Degree of Intensity in English-Chinese Translation

    Open Access•Li Long, Canzhong Wu•ARTICLE•Functional Linguistics•2019

The claim in translation studies that Chinese tends to have a preference for stronger or more exaggerated terms than does English has not been substantiated by any hard linguistic evidence. One system to approach such perceived differences in intensity is degree of intensity (DOI), which is an important device of fine-tuning taken by a speaker to express interpersonal judgments. However, it has not been systematically studied, in quantitative ter…

  • Attitude as mediation

Hailing Yu, Canzhong Wu•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2018

As explicit expression of attitude is restrained in translations of canonical texts, the peritext often becomes a place for the translator’s attitudinal mediation. Unlike previous studies where the translational peritext is under the name of the translator, this study presents a special case in which the peritext attached to the translation of the Platform Sutra , a religious text, is attributed to the translator’s teacher, whose lectures in the …

  • Coherence in Hong Lou Meng and its English translations

    Open Access•Li Xi, Canzhong Wu•ARTICLE•Functional Linguistics•2017

Coherence can be studied from both logical and textual perspectives in systemic functional linguistics. The logical and textual metafunctions together contribute to the coherence of a text. Coherence is realized through clause complexes and cohesive chains at the lexicogrammatical level from the logical and textual meanings. Clause complex reflects the logical development of the text, while cohesive chains are the threads of a coherent text. The …
