‘Words, Words, Words’: Making Comics and Sense of the Three Texts of Hamlet
In teaching our first-year university students to understand what Shakespearean language is and what it does, we asked them to edit the three different early modern editions of Hamlet and then adapt their edits into a comics spread. Using some of the numerous graphic novel adaptations of Shakespeare and a platform that we forked from Willian Carvalho’s 2012 project ‘comicgen’, our first-year university students create their own visual representat…
Long-term reindeer grazing limits warming-induced increases in CO 2 released by tundra heath soil: Potential role of soil C quality
The current climate warming in the Arctic may increase the microbial degradation of vast pools of soil carbon (C); however, the temperature sensitivity of decomposition is often highly dependent on the quality of accumulated soil C. Grazing by reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) substantially affects the dominant vegetation and often increases graminoids in relation to dwarf shrubs in ecosystems, but the effect of this vegetation shift on the soil C …
A database and synthesis of northern peatland soil properties and Holocene carbon and nitrogen accumulation
Here, we present results from the most comprehensive compilation of Holocene peat soil properties with associated carbon and nitrogen accumulation rates for northern peatlands. Our database consists of 268 peat cores from 215 sites located north of 45°N. It encompasses regions within which peat carbon data have only recently become available, such as the West Siberia Lowlands, the Hudson Bay Lowlands, Kamchatka in Far East Russia, and the Tibetan…
Let's Get a Bit of Context: Fifty Shades and the Phenomenon of 'Pulling to Publish' in Twilight Fan Fiction
The publishing success of E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey, a series with origins as Twilight fan fiction, has energised popular interest in the practice of writing fan fiction (or 'fanfics'). Equally, however, the series' popularity has fuelled debate on the ethics of its commercial publication. This article highlights the divisive and polarising phenomenon of 'pulling to publish' in the Twilight fandom. 'Pulling to publish' refers to the proces…

The wealth of the greater Irish landowners, 1750-1815
My prime concern in approaching this subject was to discover, if possible, some precise facts about the finances of the landowning class in what is generally accounted to have been their years of greatest affluence. This article is in effect a report on such sources of information as it was possible to explore together with tentative answers to some of the questions that appeared to need raising if the economic condition of the ascendancy landown…
XIX. The Irish house of commons in 1769
In 1765 a major decision was taken in London which amounted to the formulation of a new English policy towards Ireland: viceroys in future were to reside constantly in Dublin and the old system of undertakers was to be overthrown. But it was not until 1767 that British government found in Viscount Townsend a nobleman prepared to carry out the new policy. By May of 1768 Townsend had reached the crisis point in his relations with the undertakers. T…
The house of lords and Ireland in the age of Peel, 1832–50
Before considering the manner in which the house of lords handled Irish questions in the age of Peel a brief examination of the ties between the United Kingdom upper house and Ireland is necessary A striking fact that requires emphasis is the growth between 1783 and 1832 of the ‘Irish interest’ in the lords. In the eighteenth century, when the British house of lords was a relatively small body of little over 200 members, the number of peers with …
