Audio description and reception-centred research
This chapter focuses on audio description research from a reception studies perspective. Since its inception into audiovisual translation studies slightly over ten years ago, research on audio description has grown exponentially and, unlike other audiovisual translation techniques and the related research, it has very often placed the needs, priorities and preferences of the end users at its core. After reviewing the tools and methodologies so fa…
Dubbing, perception and reception
Dubbing is one of the oldest, most commonly employed and best known audiovisual translation techniques, yet still relatively underresearched, at least from the point of view of its reception by audiences across the world. This chapter offers an overview of approaches, tools and methods which can be used for reception-centred dubbing research, by drawing from the literature on media and reception studies. Subsequently, it provides an overview of s…
Reception Studies and Audiovisual Translation
The coming of age of audiovisual translation studies has brought about a much-needed surge of studies focusing on the audience, their comprehension, appreciation or rejection of what reaches them through the medium of translation. Although complex to perform, studies on the reception of translated audiovisual texts offer a uniquely thorough picture of the life and afterlife of these texts. This volume provides a detailed and comprehensive overvie…

The layers of subtitling
The study of subtitling, although widely practiced over the past 20 years, has generally been confined to comparative studies focusing on the product of subtitle translation, with little or no consideration of the conditions of creation and reception. Focusing on the process of subtitle production, occasional studies have touched upon the cognitive processes accompanying it, but no study so far has related these processes, and the resulting produ…
New imperialism in (re)translation
For speakers of Arabic, Disney’s animated feature films and TV products, both old and new, are increasingly made available in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), a pan-Arab version of the language which was hardly ever used for similar forms of entertainment until 2012. When Al Jazeera signed a large-scale distribution agreement with Disney, in 2013, things began to change radically, not only in terms of the variety of Arabic chosen for translation and…
Visual and narrative priorities of the blind and non-blind
This paper reports on a complex experiment carried out in 2010 in Italy with sighted individuals and the blind, the primary aim of which was to investigate the applicability of eye tracking research to audio description (AD). Starting from the identification of the visual priorities of sighted individuals for two, 100-second, virtually dialogue-free clips from the same film (Tris di donne & abiti nuziali), the project continued with the drafting …
How sound is the Pear Tree Story? Testing the effect of varying audio stimuli on visual attention distribution
Looking at the literature on the subject of audio description, there is a neglected area which is often mentioned but never studied: soundtrack. This article describes an empirical test with the aim of investigating one of the many thorny issues in audio description: how the soundtrack of audiovisual texts influences perception and comprehension of the scene. Viewers' perception of dynamic media can vary depending on the stimuli introduced, and l…
Translations, Transcreations and Transrepresentations of India in the Italian Media
This paper explores the dynamics of cultural representation through the media, making special reference to the translation of cultural traits that occur in the cinema and television. By taking into account several films and television commercials which were broadcast in Italy over a five-year span, featuring variously complex and stratified translations of India, an attempt is made to define and explore the different guises which translation can …
