Homeless Hospitality
This paper offers a reading of Immanuel Kant's discussion of hospitality in his treatise Zum ewigen Frieden (Toward Eternal Peace) (1795) in order to explore ways in which the text goes beyond its stated definition of hospitality and sketches the possibility of a “homeless hospitality” that would be akin to Jacques Derrida's quasi-concept of unconditional hospitality. Derrida argues that the concept of hospitality presupposes conditions (a host, …

Gailus, Andreas. Forms of Life
Experimenting
The work of Samuel Weber has greatly influenced writers and thinkers across the arts and humanities: including literary, critical, and cultural theory; media, communication, theater, and cultural studies; new media and technology; psychoanalysis; and philosophy. His remarkable and inaugural texts have been especially important to the deconstructive tradition, given his early recognition of the importance of the writings of Jacques Derrida. Taught…

Precarious Rhetorics
OUR COLLEC TION has come together in the midst of the rise of the global Right. It will likely be received and circulate in a global context wherein this ascendency has been consolidated through an entrenched hard-right populism, marked by xenophobia and racialized social orderings, and characterized by nativist, heteronormative, hypermasculine, and heteropatriarchal leadership styles and structures.Such structures are apparent in the authoritaria…

Legacies of Paul de Man
High Anxieties
High Anxieties explores the history and ideological ramifications of the modern concept of addiction. Little more than a century old, the notions of "addict" as an identity and "addiction" as a disease of the will form part of the story of modernity. What is addiction? This collection of essays illuminates and refashions the term, delivering a complex and mature understanding of addiction. Brodie and Redfield's introduction provides a roadmap for…
Imagi-Nation
Of the many relics of the Romantic era that continue to shape our (post)modernity, the nation-state surely ranks among the most significant. Two decades ago Benedict Anderson commented that "'the end of the era of nationalism,' so long prophesied, is not remotely in sight" [IC 3], and the intervening years have made it increasingly clear that the developments and processes we summarize as "globalization" operate in mingled synchrony and tension w…
De Man, Schiller, and the Politics of Reception
Over the last ten years, the work of Paul Man has not become any easier to assimilate. Frank Lentricchia could not have been more wide of the mark when in 1983 he predicted the war between traditionalists and deconstructors would draw to a close by the end of this decade, with Man rediscovered as the most brilliant hero of traditionalism [39]. For even if Man's juvenile contributions to Le soir had remained hidden a few more years in the archive,…
