Distributional Trends and the Induction Supports and Preparedness of Early Career Teachers: Evidence From Longitudinal Nationally Representative Data
Using nationally representative data from 2000 to 2021, we examine the distribution of teacher characteristics and qualifications over time, with an emphasis on early career teacher (ECT) qualifications, access to induction supports, and perceptions of preparedness and their distribution across majority-minority, high-poverty, and rural schools. We find the proportion of ECTs and first-year teachers has remained mostly stable and even declined sl…
Development of an educational and monitoring mobile application for pregnant women in Nigeria
Introduction: Nigeria accounts for 20% of all maternal mortality. Recently, more mobile health technology (mHealth) interventions are emerging in sub-Saharan Africa. The potential of mobile applications in maternal care has not been explored in Nigeria. This study describes the process of design, development, and testing of an educational and monitoring mobile application for pregnant women in Nigeria. Method: Using a user-centered design, we con…
The Buddhist Components of Caodaism and Their Reorientation
Emerging through séances in Southern Vietnam in 1926, the Đại Đạo Tam Kỳ Phổ Độ, commonly known as the Cao Đài Religion, illustrates a unique form of religious syncretism. As part of the three major syncretized religious elements, Buddhism shows the most prominent influence, playing a key role in shaping its theological doctrines and its ritual practices. By conducting a comprehensive, comparative textual analysis focusing on syncretism and the e…
Incremental financial costs of strengthening large-scale child nutrition programs in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Vietnam: Retrospective expenditure analysis
BACKGROUND: Inattention to young child growth and development in a transitioning global environment can undermine the foundation of human capital and future progress. Diets that provide adequate energy and nutrients are critical for children's physical and cognitive development from 6 to 23.9 months of age and beyond. Still, over 70% of young children do not receive foods with sufficient nutrition particularly in low-and-middle income countries. …
Fieldwork in pro-poor tourism: A reflexive account
Tourism studies pay relatively little attention to the importance of reflexivity and metacognition. This article highlights the integral importance of explicitly considering reflexivity and metacognition issues as part of the research process when studying pro-poor tourism (PPT). Hence, the paper presents a reflexive and metacognitive account of the challenges and obstacles encountered while undertaking ethnographic fieldwork in PPT. Drawing on t…
First foods in a packaged world: Results from the Commit consortium to protect young child diets in Southeast Asia
Although commercially produced complementary foods (CPCFs) are increasingly sold throughout Southeast Asia, concerns have been raised about CPCFs nutritional quality, labelling practices and the strength and scope of national CPCF regulations. The Consortium for Improving Complementary Foods in Southeast Asia (COMMIT), composed of UN agencies and civil society organizations, was formed to assess the nutrient gap in the diets of young children and…

Pop-Up or Permanent? The Case of the Mardi Gras Museum
The Mardi Gras Museum (MGM) popped-up for the 35th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras but was quickly taken down (January 29–March 3, 2013). The necessity for permanent rather than temporary cultural interventions became a major issue in subsequent debates about establishing an LGBTQ+ museum. Indeed, in museum discourse, temporariness often precludes pop-up museums from being considered genuine museums. While recognizing these i…
A Pilot Biomonitoring Study of Cumulative Phthalates Exposure among Vietnamese American Nail Salon Workers
Many California nail salon workers are low-income Vietnamese women of reproductive age who use nail products daily that contain androgen-disrupting phthalates, which may increase risk of male reproductive tract abnormalities during pregnancy. Yet, few studies have characterized phthalate exposures among this workforce. To characterize individual metabolites and cumulative phthalates exposure among a potentially vulnerable occupational group of na…
Co-existence and collaboration: Australian Aids quilts in public museums and community collections
The Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt is arguably the most recognizable artefact of the AIDS Crisis in Australia. Consisting of over 800 panels, most of the quilt is now divided between a public museum (Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney) and a community organization (AIDS Memorial Candlelight Vigil & Quilt Project, Melbourne). This paper compares the accessibility and meaning of the quilt depending on its location. In doing so, it argues t…
The Fragmentation of Hospital Use Among a Cohort of High Utilizers: Implications for Emerging Care Coordination Strategies for Patients With Multiple Chronic Conditions
BACKGROUND: Use of multiple hospitals by patients with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) may undermine emerging care coordination initiatives. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and correlates of fragmented hospital use among high users with MCC and derive implications for care management. RESEARCH DESIGN: Using all-payer hospital billing data, we follow a 2-year cohort of patients with at least 2 inpatient stays, ident…
Method Choice in Nonfatal Self-Harm as a Predictor of Subsequent Episodes of Self-Harm and Suicide: Implications for Clinical Practice
Objectives. We examined time-varying and time-invariant characteristics of nonfatal intentional self-harm episodes in relation to subsequent episodes of self-harm and suicide. Methods. We conducted a follow-up cohort study through 2007 of 3600 patients discharged from hospitals in New Jersey with a primary diagnosis of intentional self-harm in 2003. We determined repetition of self-harm from hospital records and suicide from state registers. Resu…
Diurnal changes in plasma prolactin during the last one third of pregnancy in the baboon
Previous studies in our laboratory revealed that daily plasma prolactin (Prl) levels were higher in the evening than in the morning in the pregnant baboon suggesting a diurnal variation. The goal of this study was to examine in more detail the diurnal alterations in plasma Prl levels. A tethered pregnant baboon model was utilized for these studies. Hourly venous blood samples were taken from 0700 to 2400 hr (n=10) or until 0700 hr the following d…
The Role of Frequency and Affective Assessment in Associative Enrichment
It was hypothesized that the meaningful ordering of events made possible by affective assessment can be shown to influence the generation of word-associates to consonant-vowel-consonant trigrams which have previously failed to reflect such word quality. It was also hypothesized that this associative enrichment is independent of such frequency considerations as the nomothetic association value of the items to be learned, or the number of times suc…
