It was hypothesized that the meaningful ordering of events made possible by affective assessment can be shown to influence the generation of word-associates to consonant-vowel-consonant trigrams which have previously failed to reflect such word quality. It was also hypothesized that this associative enrichment is independent of such frequency considerations as the nomothetic association value of the items to be learned, or the number of times such items are exposed to Ss for memorization. Two studies are presented (N = 50 male and female undergraduates in each) which used both a paired-associate and a free-recall format as a preliminary task, followed by a production method of word association to assess the meaning-extension achieved in the effort to learn trigrams. The results of both studies support the experimental hypotheses
