Digital storytelling for emotional engagement in museums: Design and evaluation of the Hunterian Antonine Wall Emotive experiences
Museums increasingly recognise that emotional engagement shapes visitor experiences, yet systematic methodological frameworks for designing and evaluating digital storytelling that fosters affective connections are lacking. This paper advanced the field by presenting novel design insights and a rigorously tested evaluation framework for digital storytelling experiences that promote emotional engagement in cultural heritage settings. We examine ho…
Nobody’s Listening: Evaluating the Impact of Immersive VR for Engaging with Difficult Heritage and Human Rights
Immersive virtual reality (VR) offers promising approaches for engaging with difficult heritage and human rights issues, potentially fostering deeper emotional connections than traditional media. This paper presents a mixed-methods evaluation of Nobody’s Listening, a VR experience documenting the Yazidi genocide in Iraq (2014–2017). Employing a historical empathy framework, the study analyses pre- and post-experience surveys, interviews, and obse…
Practice architectures for bridging the semantic gap in museum documentation
In this paper we address a persistent widespread issue in museum documentation, the semantic gap: a disconnect between how users search online collections and staff apply metadata. By applying a systems-level understanding to documentation practices, we not only interrogate the complexity of the semantic gap, but also envision ways to bridge it. To examine documentation practices in depth, we use the case study of National Museums Scotland, under…

Testing the Uses and Gratifications Approach to Museum Visiting: Adopting a Mediated Perspective in the Cultural Domain
This article examines the motivations of museum visitors and some of the primary needs they seek to satisfy in their contact with museums. The authors used a survey conducted in three regional museums of the island of Lesvos in Greece to establish a hierarchy of visitor gratifications. The survey included questions about demographic information and asked visitors to rank their motives when visiting the museums. It was filled in by 416 visitors an…
Evaluation strategies in the cultural sector: The case of the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow
The paper examines museum evaluation activities in their social and political context and advocates the need for evaluation strategies in the cultural sector. It analyses the case of the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow, which commissioned the design of such a strategy as part of its current project for the redevelopment of displays and visitor facilities. The Strategy covered the evaluation of the new displays, of orientation provis…

Euesperides: The Rescue of an Excavation
There was a time when the Department of Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford was prosperous enough to support a venture which called itself the Ashmolean Expedition to Cyrenaica. The form this exercise took was the excavation over three seasons between 1952 and 1954 of parts of the site of the Greek city of Euesperides situated on the outskirts of Benghazi (Fig. 1 ). Euesperides does not figure large in history. We first hear of it in 51…
