  • The Role of Prosody in Disambiguating English Indirect Requests

Open Access•Sean Trott, Alexander Reed et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2023•References: 64

Ambiguity pervades language. The sentence “My office is really hot” could be interpreted as a complaint about the temperature or as an indirect request to turn on the air conditioning. How do comprehenders determine a speaker’s intended interpretation? One possibility is that speakers and comprehenders exploit prosody to overcome the pragmatic ambiguity inherent in indirect requests. In a pre-registered behavioral experiment, we find that human l…

  • An Idiom of Melodic-Harmonic Divorce

    Open Access•Alexander Reed, S Alexander Reed•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2022

Within the stratified harmonic behavior known as melodic-harmonic divorce, this paper identifies a gesture repeated idiomatically across rock repertory. Dubbed “sub-circle” motion, this idiom is specifically a form of syntax divorce wherein a melodic layer unfolds in a way consonant with and suggestive of circle-of-fifths root motion (+P4) between two accompanying major chords; however, the harmonic layer’s root instead moves up by a minor third …

  • Excavation at Bantham, South Devon, and Post-Roman Trade in South-West England

Alexander Reed, Stephen Reed et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Excavation at Bantham Ham in 2001 examined a sequence of post-Roman occupation with radiocarbon dates centred on the late 5th and 6th centuries. Despite the limited area of exposure, a major and unusually well-preserved assemblage of Mediterranean amphorae was recovered; among sites in the British Isles, the quantity of ceramics is second only to that from Tintagel. This assemblage is of great significance in the study of links between western Br…

  • Critique of Canaan Banana's call to rewrite the Bible

    Alexander Reed, S A Reed•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•1996

Canaan Banana is an African liberation theologian who was prominently involved in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle. He has written an article 'The Case for a New Bible' in which he argues that the Christian Bible should be rewritten so that it can be relevant for people in postcolonial societies. Banana is concerned that there are oppressive texts in the Bible that continue to be used by people to legitimise the oppression of others. He argues that…

  • Genre, Setting and Title of 4Q477

Stephen A Reed, Alexander Reed•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•1996

  • The Dead Sea Scrolls on Microfiche

  • Qumran Corner

Stephen A Reed, Alexander Reed•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•1994
