Navigating the Forgetting Curve
Retention of foundational knowledge is critical in dental education, yet the implications of Ebbinghaus forgetting curve are often overlooked. This study examined how well dental students retained core periodontal concepts and how confident in their knowledge evolved over the dental school years. A standardized 20-question multiple-choice exam was administered to 120 students at six points: before and after each of three progressive periodontal c…
Peer Mentorship for Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence
The aim of this study is to describe the collaborative development and pilot implementation of a peer-support program for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). The program was piloted for 6 months and pre- and post-intervention in-depth interviews were conducted with mentors and mentees. In in-depth i…
The Cambridge Companion to Hildegard of Bingen
This specially commissioned collection of thirteen essays explores the life and works of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), monastic founder, leader of a community of nuns, composer, active correspondent, and writer of religious visions, theological treatises, sermons, and scientific and medical texts. Aimed at advanced university students and new Hildegard researchers, the essays provide a broad context for Hildegard's life and monastic setting, a…

Introduction
The three articles in this “In Focus” section originated as papers delivered at Material Matters, the tenth annual conference of the Atlantic Mediaeval Association held at Dalhousie University and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, September 22–23, 2017. The conference itself was inspired by, and timed to coincide with, a major exhibition at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia — Centuries of Silence: the Discovery of the Salzinnes Antiphonal, which ran f…
Nature, Reason, and Light in Vision—Aus dem Leben der Hildegard von Bingen
Historical understandings of Hildegard (1098–1179) occupy a central position in the recent revival of the Middle Ages. Viewed as a protofeminist and the first documented female composer, Hildegard is often used as a role model in contemporary times. Through an examination of Margarethe von Trotta’s film Vision , this essay uncovers another image of Hildegard, as an enlightened thinker, deeply invested in the acquisition of knowledge, and as a sci…

Evolving capacity and decision-making in practice
The rights of adolescents and young people in international law and agreements have evolved significantly from a focus on protection to a recognition of “evolving capacities” and decision-making ability. Unclear policies and regulations and variations in actual practice may leave providers with little clarity on how to support adolescent decision-making and instead create unintended barriers. This study in Mexico City in 2009 explored whether reg…

Decisionmaking Regarding Unwanted Pregnancy among Adolescents in Mexico City
Adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean confront difficult decisions when faced with unwanted pregnancies, especially given the region's legal restrictions on and widespread cultural opposition to abortion. Little research has been conducted on pregnancy decisionmaking among young people in this region. This study examines the role of peers, partners, family members, and health‐care providers in adolescents' decisionmaking regarding pregna…

Mexican Rural Women's Knowledge of the Environment
