School enrollment shifts five years after the pandemic
The stickiness of pandemic-driven disenrollment from public schools
Ability signals and rigorous coursework
Inequality in household adaptation to schooling shocks
Learning is inhibited by heat exposure, both internationally and within the United States
The Wages of Sinistrality
Left- and right-handed individuals have different neurological wiring, particularly with regard to language processing. Multiple datasets from the United States and the United Kingdom show that lefties exhibit significant human capital deficits relative to righties. Lefties score 0.1 standard deviations lower on cognitive skill measures, have more behavioral problems, have more learning disabilities such as dyslexia, complete less schooling, and …
Identification of Differential Item Functioning in Assessment Booklet Designs With Structurally Missing Data
The Mantel—Haenszel procedure is a popular technique for determining items that may exhibit differential item functioning (DIF). Numerous studies have focused on the strengths and weaknesses of this procedure, but few have focused the performance of the Mantel—Haenszel method when structurally missing data are present as a result of test booklet design. The current research compares the Type I error rate, power rate, and accuracy of DIF statistic…
Comparison of Multiple-Indicators, Multiple-Causes– and Item Response Theory–Based Analyses of Subgroup Differences
This research provides a direct comparison of effect size estimates based on structural equation modeling (SEM), item response theory (IRT), and raw scores. Differences between the SEM, IRT, and raw score approaches are examined under a variety of data conditions (IRT models underlying the data, test lengths, magnitude of group differences, and relative size of reference and focal groups). Results show that all studied methods perform similarly. …
Reasons smokers give for stopping smoking
Correspondence and requests for reprints to : Dr Pierce. Abstract Objective -To determine the frequency and distribution of reasons that smokers give for stopping smoking, and whether any type of reason is associated with a greater likelihood of success than any other. Design Univariate and multivariate analyses of reasons for stopping smoking by demographic characteristics, success in stopping by demographic character istics, and success in stop…
