  • The interventional advantage of interpersonal emotion regulation in vicariously learned fear

Yong Huang, Haolan Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2026

Third-party intervention is an altruistic behavior of maintaining fairness at personal costs in a self-irrelevant situation. Though prosocial emotion has been considered an important trigger of altruistic behavior, how emotional involvement is related to third-party intervention during unfair events remains elusive. To address this issue, we manipulated allocation fairness and assessed emotional states before and after intervention in a third-par…

  • Situation covariation and goal adaptiveness? The promoting effect of cognitive flexibility on emotion regulation in depression

Wei Gao, Xinyu Yan et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2024

Cognitive inflexibility as a generalized characteristic of depression has been closely implicated in maladaptive coping with changing situations and goals in daily life. The association between cognitive flexibility and depression can be elucidated by situation covariation and goal adaptiveness of emotion regulation flexibility (ERF), which facilitates adaptive responses to changing environments. However, little is known about the contribution of…

  • Unconscious and conscious acceptance downregulate aggressive behavior

Open Access•Zhiling Zhang, Jixuan Mao et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2023

Social exclusion can induce negative emotions and aggression. While previous studies have investigated the effect of trait acceptance on emotional experience and aggression during social exclusion, it is still unclear how different forms of acceptance strategy can downregulate negative emotions and whether this potential reduction of negative emotions should mediate the effect of acceptance on aggression. To address these questions, 100 participa…

  • Awe weakens the Aids-related stigma

Open Access•Li Luo, Dong Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Stigma toward people with HIV or AIDS produces significant harms to their life and also hinders the prevention of AIDS. In the present study, we tested whether awe can weaken AIDS-related stigma and the mediating role of connectedness and empathy between them through a cross-sectional study (Study 1, N = 372) and two experimental studies (Study 2a and 2b, N = 110 and N = 180, respectively). Results showed that awe reduced AIDS-related stigma (Stu…

  • Trait Acceptance Buffers Aggressive Tendency by the Regulation of Anger during Social Exclusion

Open Access•Conglian He, Jixuan Mao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Social exclusion has led to increased negative emotions and aggressive behaviors, two outcomes that are correlated with each other. Thus, the down-regulation of negative emotions appears to play a crucial role in reducing the tendency for aggressive behavior. However, this assumption has not yet been tested. To this end, a total of 397 undergraduates reported their aggressive tendencies, state emotions and trait acceptance by completing correspon…

  • Differential Effects of Optimism and Pessimism on Adolescents’ Subjective Well-Being

Open Access•Rong Zou, Xiaobin Hong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Prior research has found the differential strength of optimism and pessimism in predicting physical health. However, whether similar findings would be obtained in predicting subjective well-being and the possible underlying mechanisms are still unclear. This study examined the relative strength of optimism and pessimism in predicting adolescent life satisfaction and depression, and further explored the possible mediating mechanisms from the persp…

  • Increased motivational intensity leads to preference for distraction over reappraisal during emotion regulation

Jiemin Yang, Xinyu Yan et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2021

Motivation is considered important in the study of emotion regulation. However, it remains unknown whether and how varied motivation may influence people's emotion regulation choice. To address this question, 51 participants first performed a global-local task that measures attentional breadth. Then, they were required to choose emotion regulation strategies, reappraisal, or distraction, to regulate their emotion in emotional contexts that varied…

Quanshan Long, Na Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2019

Cognitive training seems a promising approach to enhance emotion regulation. To establish a causal connection, researchers must compare the training intervention with a control group that accounts for improvements induced by some factors other than the training. Despite this familiar methodology, the influence of expectations on the transfer effects of training remains poorly understood. We tested this possibility in 2 experiments, where a proced…

  • Negative Emotion Interferes with Behavioral Inhibitory Control

Yong Xin, Hong Li et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2010
