  • NOthing goes to WAste (Nowa)

Open Access•Carmen Esposito, Owen Alexander Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2024•References: 24

Advancements in archaeological sciences through innovative scientific techniques applied to ancient human remains have increasingly been transforming the study of the past. Destructive analyses of bioarchaeological or palaeontological specimens such as dental histology, isotopic or elemental analysis of dental mineralised tissues, 14C dating, proteomic analysis or ancient DNA are increasingly being applied to obtain ever more refined past life hi…

  • Spatially-Resolved Ca Isotopic and Trace Element Variations in Human Deciduous Teeth Record Diet and Physiological Change

Qiong Li, Alessia Nava et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Dental enamel represents an important mineralized archive of an individual’s early life. Previously, isotopic (Ca) or trace element ratios (Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca) have been used to reveal dietary and weaning histories, although few studies have utilized both proxies to evaluate the respective results. Here we report histologically-defined, spatially-resolved Ca-isotope (laser-cut & TIMS) and trace element ratio (Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca; LA-ICPMS) profiles along the …

  • Volcanic ash layers illuminate the resilience of Neanderthals and early modern humans to natural hazards

Open Access•J J Lowe, John Lowe et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2012

Marked changes in human dispersal and development during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition have been attributed to massive volcanic eruption and/or severe climatic deterioration. We test this concept using records of volcanic ash layers of the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption dated to ca. 40,000 y ago (40 ka B.P.). The distribution of the Campanian Ignimbrite has been enhanced by the discovery of cryptotephra deposits (volcanic ash layers t…

  • Ägyptische Archäologie im deutschsprachigen Raum. Tradition, Standard, Status und Ausblick

Irene Forstner-Müller, Wolfgang Muller et al.•CHAPTER•Methodik und Didaktik in der…•2011

Field archaeological and archaeological methods in general are not classed as belonging to the core of Egyptology. As a consequence, Egyptology can neither participate in contemporary archaeological discussions, nor can it meet the demands of the increasing threat to antiquities in Egypt. Greater archaeological involvement could give an essential impetus to overcome traditional Egyptological views and limitedness.

• The importance of lead in the silver production at Riotinto (Spain)

Open Access•Lorna Anguilano, Thilo Rehren et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 1

The site of Corta Lago is located within Rio Tinto mining district, in the Huelva province, in the South-West of Spain. This region is geologically characterised by the presence of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, highly important for the concentration and the subsequent exploitation and production of several metals such as silver, copper, gold and manganese, since the Bronze Age up to few decades ago. This paper focuses on the exploitation of the North …

  • Changing Patterns of Party Competition in Austria

Wolfgang C Müller, Wolfgang Muller et al.•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2004•Cited by: 22

The Austrian party system has entered a new phase since the controversial ÖVP-FPÖ coalition came into office in February 2000. The party system literature offers two contradicting expectations about party system mechanics in multi-party systems without relevant extremist parties: competition structured by party alliances and strictly competitive relations between government and opposition parties (as suggested by Sartori 1976) versus competition …

  • Origin and Migration of the Alpine Iceman

Open Access•Wolfgang Muller, Henry Fricke et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2003

The Alpine Iceman provides a unique window into the Neolithic-Copper Age of Europe. We compared the radiogenic (strontium and lead) and stable (oxygen and carbon) isotope composition of the Iceman's teeth and bones, as well as 40 Ar/ 39 Ar mica ages from his intestine, to local geology and hydrology, and we inferred his habitat and range from childhood to adult life. The Iceman's origin can be restricted to a few valleys within ∼60 kilometers sou…

Open Access•Michael Myrtek, Christian Scharff et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1996•References: 2

This study of 50 eleven-year-old boys demonstrates a new procedure for gathering physiological, psychological, and behavioral data on television viewing in the home environment on a normal school day, using a special ambulatory monitoring device capable of storing 23-hour records. The mean time spent watching TV was 123 minutes per day, during which the boys watched mostly entertainment and action shows. Heart rate as compared to the other progra…
