  • Imperfect ecofuturisms

    Antonio López•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Media•2025

This article uses the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a springboard for examining and envisioning decolonial possibilities for the future. Rather than locating salvation or futurity in the myth of vibranium’s limitless extraction, this article turns towards the everyday, inventive agency found in African/Afrofuturist and Chicanx/Latin American artistic practices. Drawing from personal stories and experiences, it explores how the film’s spe…

  • Ecomedia Literacy’s El Buen Vivir/Sumak Kawsay

Sarawi Andrango, Darío Iza Pilaquinga et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Communication•2024

The Andean concept of “sumak kawsay” (translated as el buen vivir in Spanish and the good life/good living in English) entails a form of relationality between humans and the other-than-human realms (land, water, minerals, air, spirits, etc.) based on care and reciprocity. Corresponding with the “eco-territorial turn” in Latin American social movements, el buen vivir/sumak kawsay informs an ecocentric and decolonial disposition that recognizes the…

In this research, we evaluated the effectiveness of an ecomedia literacy-based lesson. Par…

The results are contextualised alongside all of the existing Gravettian sites in Mediterranean Iberia. The study of the material culture,…

  • Seeing microplastic clouds

    Antonio López•ARTICLE•The Journal of Environmental…•2023

Connecting environmental and digital media education with the guiding metaphor of water, this article explores ecomedia literacy, a methodology that prompts students to perform a holistic analysis and systems thinking of gadgets using four zones of inquiry: ecoculture, political ecology, ecomateriality, and lifeworld. Ecoculture involves studying the discourses, symbols, and stories associated with gadgets. Political ecology relates to the ideolo…

  • Nation, Race, and Performance in the Poetics of Nicolás Guillén and Nancy Morejón

Aisha Z Cort, Antonio López•ARTICLE•Small Axe A Caribbean Journal of…•2021

In the context of revolutionary Cuba, discourses of identity are veiled behind discussions and performances of nation and nationality. Consideration of the paradoxical relation of blackness and the Cuban Revolution must consider the historical relation of blackness to the Cuban nation, from its inception, to independence, through the Republic and immediately prior to the Revolution. In addition, a discussion of this relation must consider the dis…

  • Nancy Morejón, Nicolás Guillén y el cimarronaje aún necesario en Cuba contemporánea

    Odette Casamayor-Cisneros, Antonio López•ARTICLE•Small Axe A Caribbean Journal of…•2021

This intersectional and epistemological study of Nancy Morejón’s 1982 Nación y mestizaje en Nicolás Guillén resolves the tension, which intrigued most of her critics, between her political commitment and sophisticated lyricism. The author examines Morejón’s unquestionable revolutionary support and adhesion to Guillén’s conceptualization of la nación mestiza—instrumental for the cohesiveness promoted by the revolutionary regime—through the compreh…

  • Redefining Mestizaje

Devyn Spence Benson, Antonio López•ARTICLE•Small Axe A Caribbean Journal of…•2021

This essay recovers the history of 1960s and 1970s black movements in Cuba through an examination of works by Afro-Cuban intellectuals and their meetings with Caribbean thinkers to show the coexistence of mestizaje and black consciousness as a defining, but overlooked, feature of black activism in Cuba. While the existing literature locates black consciousness in the English- and French-speaking Caribbean, this essay highlights how Afro-Cubans in…

  • Alberto O’Farrill

    Antonio López•CHAPTER•Unbecoming blackness•2020

This chapter explores the fragments arrachés of Alberto O'Farrill—the black writer and actor who appeared on the teatro bufo (Cuban minstrelsy) stage and in the New York City Latino newspapers La Prensa and El Gráfico from the 1920s to the 1930s. O'Farrill's arrival in the United States via Key West seemingly allowed him a career in the transnational teatro bufo, which was then a belated form of troubling racial representation. The traces in La P…

This was a minstrel moment, whose lineage involves the Jewish American Paul Muni's Italianface performance in the 1932 version of the film, a…

  • Defusing the Cannon/Canon

    Antonio López, Antonio M López•ARTICLE•Environmental Communication•2010

In order to convey the dangers of climate change, many activists deploy the old canon of communication theory, which views mass media as a kind of "magic bullet." Influenced by theories such as George Lakoff's cognitive linguistics, they propose that environmentally "progressive" mass media frames can be aimed like a cannon at the "public mind." This article argues that such an effort mirrors a mechanistic strategy of industrial production and re…
