How to Be Irish in an Epidemic
Reflections
Suddenly the world stopped. At least on the 20 March 2020, that is what seemed to have happened for many of us.Our comfort zone had been invaded.Covid had caught us napping, or at least in denial, relative isolation was to become the norm.I've used the term 'relative' here because the pandemic affected all of us differently. We were all changed. Some welcomed the retreat into isolation as an opportunity.Others found it oppressive, sapping of ability…
What’s the Difference
Life is unfolding, it starts here.A cared for child born out of wedlock in 1940.Unhappily fostered at 10 and registered blind at 46.Now totally blind. An 82 year old widower, living alone independently. From 2008 to her passing in 2017 cared for my wonderful wife Maura, who was living with Parkinsons and Dementia.Have 2 registered blind sons.Engage in raising awareness, challenging the injustice that denies equal access to services by people who ar…
Spectres and (Queer) spectrality in Wuthering Heights and Portia Coughlan
This article examines Derridean hauntology/spectrality in relation to Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (1847) and Marina Carr’s Portia Coughlan (1996). Of central concern is how both texts use the figure of the spectre/revenant to deconstruct stable conceptions of temporality and futurity. Common tropes such as repetition, doubling, and wild landscapes will also be considered as being of vital importance to a twinned analysis of these two texts. …
“‘Idle Talk, Idle Talk, Idle Talk’
This essay analyses Samuel Beckett’s Trilogy and Waiting for Godot through the enabling theoretical lens of Martin Heidegger’s Being and Time. Special attention shall be paid to key Heideggerian concepts: idle talk, authenticity, and inauthenticity. A Heideggerian reading of Beckett’s influential middle period allows for a rich exploration of how his works provide a vision of the psychological state of the formerly powerful Anglo-Irish in post-in…

Memory, narration and spectrality in Brian Friel's Faith Healer and Frank McGuinness's Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme
This article proposes an examination of how Brian Friel's Faith Healer functions as an intertext in Frank McGuinness's Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme. This shall be the first extensive consideration of Frank McGuinness's debt to Faith Healer, the play that convinced him that drama was the form most suited to his vision. How both plays consider the relationship between history, memory and art will be a key concern. Attention…
Interactive group activity
An ongoing challenge in classroom research is to understand children’s perspectives on their learning. While learning is highly individual, it is also significantly social and this raises methodological challenges. An Interactive Group Activity (IGA) is one of several data collection strategies used during the action research phase of the Connecting Curriculum, Connecting Learningproject (2010–2011) focusing on arts-based curriculum integration. …
