Rural and regional Australia
Limited attention was paid to rural and regional Australia in the 2007 federal election. Only six of the government's eighteen marginal seats lay there and it seemed to have weathered the ‘rural backlash’ of previous years. Yet, the ALP made considerable inroads into the…
WorkChoices and Howard's Defeat
This article seeks to perform two tasks. It seeks to first detail the changes to the industrial relations system entailed in WorkChoices (set against the background of previous Howard government policies in this field), analyse the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU's) campaign against it and the Australian Labor Party's (ALP's) industrial relations policy in response to it, and belated changes to WorkChoices. Second, it seeks to examine th…

The People's Liberation Army: A threat to India
Since the death of Mao Tse-tung, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has undergone a modernisation process in line with its changed strategic doctrine. The shift from ‘people’s war' to ‘limited war under high-tech conditions’ has seen a reduction in army personnel, selected weapons purchases, combined arms operations training and greater force projection. China's neighbours—particularly India—have felt threatened by these changes. This paper argue…

From Contradictions among the People to Class Struggle: The Theories of Uninterrupted Revolution and Continuous Revolution
SINCE THE CULTURAL Revolution, the theory of continuous revolution (chi-hsii ko-mning) has been accorded major significance in the Chinese Communist Party's own conception of its theoretical framework. This has been reflected in its incorporation in both the General Program of the Party's 1973 Constitution and the Preamble to the 1975 Constitution of the People's Republic, and in the frequent reference to it in discussions of political questions …

A New Direction for China's State Farms
ONE OF THE lesser researched aspects of Chinese society has been the operation of its state farms (guoying nongchang) and state livestock farms (guoying muchang).' Works on the Chinese economy, and even specific agricultural studies, typically either completely ignore state farms or else devote a cursory few pages to them.2 This dearth of studies on China's state farms mirrors the previous lack of coverage given them in the Chinese press, and is …
