  • Differentiation and functionality of human bronchial epithelial cells in an air-liquid interface culture are modified by irradiation exposure

Open Access•Kim Röder, Sylvie Lerchl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: -particle and X-ray irradiation on a human bronchial epithelium model, representing environmentally and medically relevant exposure. Our focus was on non-cancer outcomes, namely mucociliary transport (MCT) and epithelial barrier function, both of which are crucial for cancer risk assessment and therapeutic efficacy. Materials and methods: Basal stem cells were irradiated and terminally differentiated under air-liquid interface condi…

  • Mapping travel experience in public transport

Open Access•Esther Bosch, Michael Scholz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2026

Shifting travel from private cars to public transport is critical for meeting climate and related mobility goals, yet passengers will only choose transit if it offers a consistently positive experience. Previous studies of passenger satisfaction have largely relied on retrospective surveys, which overlook the dynamic and spatially differentiated nature of travel experience. This paper introduces a novel combination of real-time experience samplin…

  • Dynamic pricing of perishable food as a sustainable business model

    Open Access•Michael Scholz, Roman-David Kulko•ARTICLE•British Food Journal•2022

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to (1) investigate the effect of freshness on consumers' willingness to pay, (2) derive static and dynamic pricing strategies and (3) compare the effect of these pricing strategies on a retailer's revenue and food waste. This investigation helps to reveal the potentials of dynamic pricing strategies for building more sustainable business models. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct an online experim…

  • Higher frequency hedonic property price indices

    Open Access•Robert Hill, ROBERT J HILL et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2021

The hedonic imputation method allows characteristic shadow prices to evolve over time. These shadow prices are used to construct matched samples of predicted prices, which are inserted into standard price index formulas. We use a spatio-temporal model to improve the method’s effectiveness on housing data at higher frequencies. The problem is that at higher frequencies, there may not be enough observations per period to reliably estimate the chara…

  • Skulls on the road - historical traces of anatomical connections between Erlangen and Tartu/Dorpat

Open Access•Tim Simon Goldmann, Michael Scholz et al.•ARTICLE•Papers on Anthropology•2021

The Chair for the History of Medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is currently researching the provenance of human remains in the University Collections. Obviously, the by far largest number of those specimens is found in the Anatomical Collection, which is studied in close cooperation with the Institute of Functional and Clinical Anatomy a joint research project. Several specimens dating back to the time of H…

  • Towards an integrated urban development considering novel intelligent transportation systems

    Open Access•Andreas Richter, Marc-O Löwner et al.•ARTICLE•Technological Forecasting and…•2020

Urban areas are currently facing new and enormous challenges: urbanization, connected and automated land and air transport with new demand for transport and logistic services, maintenance of more complex traffic and supply infrastructure as well as mandatory digitalization of cadastral information under the constraints of limited space and resources. Different stakeholders are interested in using detailed, precise and up-to-date data about the ur…

  • An ethnopharmacological survey of medicinal plants traditionally used for cancer treatment in the Ashanti region, Ghana

Open Access•Christian Agyare, Verena Spiegler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2018

  • Ritualwandel und Deutungshoheit

    Michael Scholz•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für die Geschichte…•2015

  • Intrapopulational Relationships in Ancient Societies

Michael Scholz, SandraM Hengst et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•2001

Kinship determination is one of the major challenges for the anthropologist studying graveyard populations. Traditional techniques based on morphological comparisons of bone remains are limited. However, recent methods which generate and characterise DNA sequences derived from bones bear the possibility for a more accurate analysis. Extraction and characterisation of authentic nucleic acids was performed on a number of individuals from the early …

  • Contamination by preparation

    Michael Scholz, Carsten M Pusch•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2000

In paleogenetic science, artifacts (i.e. non-authentic DNA sequences) are mainly produced by cryptic contamination with (i) edaphon DNA sequences and/or (ii) human biomolecules derived from the involved researchers and the laboratory equipment. A third, and yet underestimated source of contamination with exogenous nucleic acids is provided by (iii) conservation practices applied to old material. Bone glue has been successfully used from the begin…

  • Molekulargenetische Analysen zur taxonomischen Bestimmung des fossilen Schädelfragments aus Warendorf-Neuwarendorf

    Michael Scholz, Carsten M Pusch•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2000

The isolation and examination DNA segments from prehistoric and fossil bone samples has become one of the biggest challenges in anthropology within the past years. By using specially developed and/or adapted genetic methods, it is possible under laboratory conditions to amplify portions of DNA from bone remains in states of good preservation by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). DNA sequence data can provide far more specific answers to palaean…

  • Cremation practices and the survival of ancient DNA

Carsten M Pusch, Martina Broghammer et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2000

Numerous burial rites have been developed in different time periods of human cultural evolution. One of the most interesting burial practices was the ritual cremation of human bodies. Due to the respective cultural and religious background, brand graves are known where human remains had been buried together with burnt bones of animal origin. To date, burnt bone samples have been refractory to PCR-mediated amplification. D/L values of aspartic aci…
