Active aging
This article examines the concept of active aging (AA) empirically, focusing on the viewpoint of older people and of professionals involved in the implementation of AA programs. A qualitative study based on interviews performed in a local community in Spain found that both convergence and divergence patterns are shown by older people and professionals in their reception and appropriation of the AA concept. The authors also discuss concordance and…

Intergenerational contact and solidarity, inside and outside the family
Analysis of intergenerational contact and solidarity patterns has generally focused on the family. However, the unprecedented co-existence of a high number of different generations raises the challenge to delve into how such patterns may develop inside and outside the family. To understand better intrafamilial and extrafamilial intergenerational contact and solidarity in Spain, three national surveys were initially studied using cross-tabulation …
In the Face of Uncertainty, Peer-Training
The training offered to university teaching staff tends to be scant, voluntary and heavily oriented toward novice teachers. With the arrival of Covid-19 and the sudden switch to online teaching, training became an urgent need for teachers. In this context, some faculty members of the University of *anonimizado* created a multi-cohort faculty peer-training group for collaborative learning in multimodal teaching methods. This paper describes the in…
A partisan pandemic
INTRODUCTION: To present an analysis of the Brazilian health system and subnational (state) variation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, based on 10 non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected daily information on implementation of 10 NPI designed to inform the public of health risks and promote distancing and mask use at the national level for eight countries across the Americas. We then analyse the adoption o…
Initial Needs Assessment in Intergenerational Centers. Reflections from a Spanish Case
Initial needs assessment can be useful for obtaining information about the issues that should be addressed in newly launched intergenerational centers. However, there are few examples of how such studies should be conducted. This paper shares insights and lessons learned during a needs assessment study conducted nine months after the inauguration of an intergenerational shared site in Spain. In addition to presenting the needs identified, such as…

Intergenerational Contact Zones
Conclusions
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book aims to emphasize how the widespread social, civic, and cultural significance of pools and beaches in Australian society contributes to their acceptance, across generations, as compelling intergenerational gathering sites. It describes how the selection of a 150-year-old barn for the site of a daylong intergenerational pro…

Using technology to connect generations
Nowadays, as ageing increases in Western societies it has become more evident that multiple generations are ageing concurrently at any given time in history. Therefore, ageing must be approached as a multi-generational phenomenon, not just as a question of elders. In this context, situations that engender increased interactions between generations are garnering more attention. There is a growing emphasis on expanding the role of technology in int…
Conceptual Frameworks and Practical Applications to Connect Generations in the Technoscape
There are many ways to frame and use technology so it functions as a pathway to intergenerational engagement. The ever evolving technoscape is filled with powerful technological tools and resources that help people connect, communicate, build relationships, and take collective action across generations. This technology can be life-altering, especially for isolated seniors and families navigating long distance relationships. However, at the center…
Situational ethics and the professionalization of social education
Most ethical considerations related to the activities of the professions, including that of social education, have been put forward using a set of professional ethics that are frequently associated with principles and imperatives that aspire to be universal but have little connection to real and specific situations. In this paper, we offer an interpretation of the ethics associated with the profession of social educator from positions that are le…
El rechazo de las mujeres mayores viudas a volverse a emparejar
The aim of this paper is delving into the attitudes by widowed older people in Spain around the possibility of repartnering, whether it is through marriage or mere cohabitation. A qualitative methodology with a sociological lens, in the way of discussion groups, has been implemented. Main research findings show that widowed older persons –particularly women, are scarcely interested in initiating a relationship with a new partner. There are divers…

Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity in Europe
Through a critical overview of the mainly individualistic and productivity-centered concept of active aging developed by the World Health Organization and some European Union institutions, it is argued that, far from being fostered, intergenerational solidarity could be endangered since its relational nature is being normatively constrained. The authors recommend that both the World Health Organization and European Union approaches need reconside…
Much More Than Accommodation in Exchange for Company
Intergenerational homeshare programs are being implemented, but they are not often submitted to evaluation. In 2009 and 2010, an evaluation of the largest intergenerational homeshare program in the country was conducted. Dimensions of intergenerational solidarity in the program were assessed through a quantitative analysis. The program was found to be one in which at least three dimensions of intergenerational solidarity—associative, affectual, a…
Intergenerational Solidarity
In 2005, the European Commission (EC) published its “green paper” Confronting Demographic Change: A New Solidarity Between the Generations, which stated: Demographic changes are creating a new society, and these changes are set to speed up from 2010 onwards: ever fewer young people and young adults, ever more older workers, pensioners and very elderly people. Our societies will have to invent new ways of liberating the potential of young people a…

Trust and Professionalism in Social Professions
This article aims at fostering reflection on trust and social professions through looking at a particular case: social education and its development and current status in Spain. The main argument presented has to do with the link between social professions and the permanent challenge faced by welfare states and democracies to provide answers to social problems and needs. Hence, social education is characterized as a means to fight social exclusio…
