Lessons Learned on Recruiting and Retaining Young Fathers in a Parenting and Repeat Pregnancy Prevention Program
Despite the small sample size, the results of this study nevertheless contribute to debates in the field regarding appropriate strategies for engaging young fathers by informing professional practice
Immigration, Occupation, and Inequality in Emergent Nineteenth-Century New England Cities
This article explores the social interactions of immigration, occupation, and wealth in two urban industrial cities of nineteenth-century New England that were largely built upon, and shaped by, immigration: the very rapidly growing factory town of Holyoke, Massachusetts, and a more mixed-market and steadily growing nearby community of Northampton, Massachusetts. Both communities were emergent, rapidly industrializing, inland cities, providing a …
The effects of wealth, occupation, and immigration on epidemic mortality from selected infectious diseases and epidemics in Holyoke township, Massachusetts, 1850−1912
BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests individual-level socioeconomic circumstances and resources may be especially salient influences on mortality within the broader context of social, economic, and environmental factors affecting urban 19th century mortality. OBJECTIVE: We sought to test individual-level socioeconomic effects on mortality from infectious and often epidemic diseases in the context of an emerging New England industrial mill town.…
Historical Changes in the Distribution and Abundance of Constructed Ponds in Response to Changing Population Density and Land Use
In the United States most ponds are constructed for varying purposes and at varying historical rates, yet little attention is paid to their presence or ecological impact. We evaluated changes in pond density, landscape position with respect to streams, and rates of pond construction and loss within a watershed in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware that has experienced increases in population density and associated changes in land use…
The Ideological Uses of Early Islam
The safe-conduct for the Abbasid ‘Abd Allāh b. ‘Alī (d. 764)
In his Ta’rīkh al-Mawṣil , al-Azdī (d. 945) records the safe-conduct ( amān ) said to have been written for the surrender of the Abbasid ‘Abd Allāh b. ‘Alī (d. 764) to his nephew, the caliph al-Manṣūr. This text has been overlooked in discussions of early Abbasid history and in studies of the work of Ibn al-Muqaffa‘ (d. c . 756), who is widely credited with its production. This article presents an annotated translation of the amān and considers i…
Developing an Identity Model for Transgender and Intersex Inclusion in Lesbian Communities
The article briefly highlights past ideologies of Essentialism and Constructionist thought, identifying their weaknesses as arguments of exclusion. By combining corporeality and mentality, the article posits an identity model, the spherical characterization model that argues for transgender inclusion in lesbian space by deconstructing the ideology behind identity group construction. Next the article applies the spherical characterization model to…

Al-Muʿāfā b. ʿImrān and the Beginnings of the Ṭabaqāt Literature
Al-Mu'āfā b. 'Imrān, an ascetic and muhaddith of the second century A.H., frequently appears in the secondary literature as the author first tabaqāt work in Arabic. This brief article examines the evidence for this attribution, rejects it, and brings together reports on al-Mu'āfā and his contribution to local Mosuli scholarship in the late and third Islamic centuries
Musicality in Modern Greek Poetry 1900–1930
In the late nineteenth century in France, a division arose between two concepts of poetry: poetry as a distinct form of expression, and poetry as a distinct form of perception. In the former the musicality of the poem was a primary feature: in the latter the aural value of the text was relatively unimportant

The Greekness of Modern Greek Surrealism
Surrealism as a full-blown artistic movement, or, as many of its exponents preferred to see it, a full-blown way of life, was very much a French product. The line of descent from Jarry’s Ubu (1896), via the self-conscious modernism of Apollinaire and Blaise Cendrars, to the Dadaist activities of 1916 represents the continuation of that semi-official anti-culture which had existed throughout nineteenth-century France. With the destruction of the o…
