Right-wing extremism and the limits of community in Zerocalcare’s This World Can’t Tear Me Down
In this article, I critically consider the representation of right-wing extremism in This World Can’t Tear Me Down , a semi-autobiographical animated television series by the Italian graphic artist Zerocalcare. In sustained dialogue both with Zerocalcare and leading Italian political philosopher Roberto Esposito and others, I explore the origins and nature of community with a special focus on what follows from the practical impossibility of conta…
The Special Court for Sierra Leone
The proposed establishment of the Special Court for Sierra Leone is a valiant effort to end impunity for the egregious crimes that were committed during the Sierra Leonean civil war. Nonetheless, the Special Court – which will have jurisdiction over crimes against humanity, war crimes, and various offences under Sierra Leonean national law – will have a number of major hurdles to cross in order to fulfill its mandate. Most notably the Court as cu…

Maternal and Child Health in Rural Kenya
Demographic characteristics of a rural area in Kenya in 1974–80
A longitudinal, epidemiological study was carried out in a rural area of Kenya with a population of about 28,000 between 1974 and 1980. Population registration during this time showed that population growth was very high between 1974 and 1978 (4·4% per year) and much lower in 1979 and 1980 (1·1%). Natural increase was nearly as high as in Kenya as a whole (3·7%) in this period. Fertility was somewhat lower than in all Kenya (the crude birth rate …
