The authors discuss selected findings of a study conducted between 1974 and 1980 in a rural area of Machakos district, Kenya. As part of a broader epidemiological study, data were collected concerning aspects of migration and circulation. These findings and methodological problems encountered in analyzing the data are discussed. Direct and indirect measures of migration are included. Figures are presented for annual intra-area, in- and out-migration rates; migration rates by age and sex; and the most common categories of persons involved in different types of circulation. Reasons for observed changes in migration patterns are discussed
