Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responsivity during adolescence in relation to psychopathic personality traits later in life
Psychopathic personality traits have been linked to low physiological arousal, particularly among high risk and forensic samples. A core indicator of physiological arousal is the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; however, findings of a link between HPA axis functioning and psychopathic personality traits have been inconsistent. Furthermore, given sex differences in both HPA axis responsivity and psychopathic personality t…
The Moderating Effects of Genetic Variations on Changes in Physical Activity Level and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Response to a Life-Style Intervention
OBJECTIVE: Prior studies identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with physical activity (PA) level in a natural environment and intervention study: rs978656-DNAPTP6, rs10887741-PAPSS2, rs7279064-C18orf2, and rs6265-BDNF. Using the four SNPs' polygenic score (PGS), we examined whether PGS moderates a life-style intervention's effect on changes in PA level and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). METHODS: This is a secondary analys…

This essay examines an often neglected legacy of the Plan: its influence on civic discourse. Best known for its City Beautiful vision of Chicago, the Plan and its implementation campaign also provided a powerful object lesson in the effectiveness of new media and techniques of mass communication for …
Public Sites Versus Public Sights
This essay examines the controversy over outdoor advertising for what it reveals about Progressive Era conceptions of public space and public culture. Beginning in the 1890s, advertisers began to widely exploit urban public space as a marketing medium. By the turn of the century, outdoor advertising had became a lightning rod for debates over the public value of an emergent mass culture and the subject of significant reform efforts. While most hi…
