  • Recommendations for a Communication Strategy to Support Informed Decision‐Making About Self or Clinician Sampling for Cervical Screening in the UK

Open Access•Denitza Williams, Eleanor Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2025

BACKGROUND: Cervical screening for high-risk Human Papillomavirus subtypes is offered to those eligible in the UK via the NHS cervical screening programmes. However, uptake of cervical screening continues to remain below the national target of 80%. Groups less likely to participate include people from low socioeconomic groups, ethnic minority backgrounds, younger/older age and/or LGBTQ group identity. Open Access•W Poortinga, Natasha Bird et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2021

Research has consistently shown that access to parks and gardens is beneficial to people's health and wellbeing. In this paper, we explore the role of both public and private green space in subjective health and wellbeing during and after the first peak of the COVID-19 outbreak that took place in the UK in the first half of 2020. It makes use of the longitudinal COVID-19 Public Experiences (COPE) study, with baseline data collected in March/April…

  • Using Visual Timelines in Telephone Interviews

    Open Access•Bethan Pell, Denitza Williams et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 43

Visual timeline methods have been used as part of face-to-face qualitative interviewing with vulnerable populations to uncover the intricacies of lived experiences, but little is known about whether visual timelines can be effectively used in telephone interviews. In this article, we reflect on the process of using visual timelines in 16 telephone interviews with women as part of the 'STarting a family when you have an Autoimmune Rheumatic diseas…

  • Feasibility and acceptability of a motivational interviewing breastfeeding peer support intervention

Open Access•Lauren Copeland, Laura Merrett et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2018

An uncontrolled study with process evaluation was conducted in three U.K. community maternity sites to establish the feasibility and acceptability of delivering a novel breastfeeding peer-support intervention informed by motivational interviewing (MI; Mam-Kind). Peer-supporters were trained to deliver the Mam-Kind intervention that provided intensive one-to-one peer-support, including (a) antenatal contact, (b) face-to-face contact within 48 hr o…

  • Availability of breastfeeding peer support in the United Kingdom

Open Access•Aimee Grant, Kirsten Mcewan et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2017

Peer support is recommended by the World Health Organization for the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding, and this recommendation is included in United Kingdom (U.K.) guidance. There is a lack of information about how, when, and where breastfeeding peer support was provided in the U.K. We aimed to generate an overview of how peer support is delivered in the U.K. and to gain an understanding of challenges for implementation. We surveyed a…

  • Neural responses to a modified Stroop paradigm in patients with complex chronic musculoskeletal pain compared to matched controls

    Open Access•Ann Taylor, Ann M Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2016

Using this modified Stroop tasks, specific differences were identified in brain activity between CMSKP patients and controls in response to pain-related information using fMRI. This provided evidence of differences in the way that pain-related information is processed in those with chronic complex musculoskeletal pain that were not detectable using the behavioural measures of speed and accuracy. The study may be helpful in gaining new insights in…

  • Foucault, Surveillance, and Carbon Monoxide Testing Within Stop-Smoking Services

Open Access•Aimee Grant, Kathryn Ashton et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2015•References: 38

Health professionals have adopted proactive testing for early evidence of disease. Researchers have identified that this leads to enumerated understandings and shapes behavior in productive ways. Smoking-cessation advisors regularly test clients for carbon monoxide (CO), but client views of this had not previously been explored. We interviewed 23 clients of a United Kingdom-based stop-smoking service regarding their experiences of CO testing. The…

  • A Qualitative Process Evaluation of Classroom-Based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to Reduce Adolescent Depression

Open Access•John Taylor, John A Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Small scale trials indicate that classroom-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for adolescents has good reach and can help prevent depression. However, under more diverse everyday conditions, such programmes tend not to show such positive effects. This study examined the process of implementing a classroom-based CBT depression prevention programme as part of a large (n = 5,030) randomised controlled trial across eight UK secondary schools whi…

  • Could a brief assessment of negative emotions and self-esteem identify adolescents at current and future risk of self-harm in the community? A prospective cohort analysis

Open Access•Rhiannon Phillips, Melissa Spears et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

A brief and targeted assessment of negative emotions and self-esteem, focusing on factors that are strongly associated with current and future self-harm, could potentially be used to help identify adolescents who are at risk in community settings. Further research should assess the psychometric properties of the items identified and test this approach in more diverse community contexts
