  • Colonial scripts and fragile queer masculinities: Brazilian gay men navigating effeminacy stigma in Canada

Marcus Cerqueira Sanzi, Sharalyn Jordan et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2026

Effeminacy remains a highly policed and racialised site of gender regulation, particularly for racialised queer men navigating migration. Drawing on interviews with six Brazilian queer men living in Canada, this qualitative study examines how effeminacy stigma is experienced, reproduced and resisted within diasporic queer spaces. Guided by frameworks of queer diaspora, postcolonial masculinity and intersectional approaches to health and belonging…

  • Another perspective: Reflections on using qualitative video-recall procedures in sexual communication research with partnered gay men

    Open Access•Mathew R Gendron, Sharalyn Jordan•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2022

As sex cultures evolve in complexity, so too must our research procedures. We introduce qualitative video-recall procedures and discuss the unique opportunities they present in the study of sexual communication. In a pilot study, three diverse gay male couples had video-recorded conversations about aspects of their sexual relationships that they wished to change or explore. Partners then individually watched and reflected on their partnered conve…

In 2015 the Gender Vectors research team received a major research grant to conduct research with and about transgender youth in the Greater Vancouver Area. A unique aspect of this research project involved combining social action research with the development of a prototype of a video game as a knowledge translation tool to depict the life experiences of trans youth. We draw on transformative gender justice theory to document and address the dim…

  • Gauging Visibility: How Female Clerical Workers Manage Work-Related Distress

    Open Access•Bonita C Long, Wendy A Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Our aim was to explain how female clerical workers manage work-related distress, using a feminist grounded theory method. Thirty-seven interviews were conducted with 24 female clerical workers. They engage in the process of gauging visibility to manage a recognition-vulnerability paradox. To gauge visibility, they take the lay of the land by attending to threats, resources, and supports within withering or flourishing work conditions. When distre…

  • Virtually Queer? Homing Devices, Mobility, and Un/Belongings

M Bryson, Lori B Macintosh et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Communication•2006

This article counters and complicates decontextualized, celebratory accounts of queer subjects and cyberspace. The authors explore the significance of communicative media for queer women, with a particular focus on the negotiation of complex identifications, communities, social networks, and knowledge practices. Using a critical, sociocultural approach, the authors make illustrative use of interviews conducted in British Columbia and Alberta that…

  • Qualitative Teamwork Issues and Strategies: Coordination Through Mutual Adjustment

Multidisciplinary research teams that include faculty, students, and volunteers can be challenging and enriching for all participants. Although such teams are becoming commonplace, minimal guidance is available about strategies to enhance team effectiveness. In this article, the authors highlight strategies to guide qualitative teamwork through coordination of team members and tasks based on mutual adjustment. Using a grounded theory exemplar, th…

Propelled by fear of violence and flight from stigma, impelled by desire for connection and belonging, the movements of people whose sexualities or genders defy and offend norms cover a complex spatial, social, and psychological terrain. This paper presents partial findings of a critical qualitative inquiry conducted in partnership with Rainbow Refugee Committee, a community organization that supports and advocates with Queer, Lesbian, Gay, Bisex…
