  • The Many Faces of Josefa Jaramillo

    Open Access•Susan Lee Johnson•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2023

Before 1970, the public had never seen a picture of Josefa Jaramillo, the Taoseña who married frontiersman Kit Carson in 1843 and stayed with him until they both died in 1868. Then, within six months, two such images crossed the portal of the Carson museum in Taos, each from a different donor. For fifty years since, historians, curators, and descendants have embraced the photos as authentic. But they are not pictures of the same person and it is …

  • Bohemians West

    Open Access•Susan Lee Johnson•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2021

Sara Bard Field and Charles Erskine Scott Wood are not the most appealing of eastern White transplants in the West, but they’re among the most intriguing given their commitment to labor, feminist, pacifist, socialist, and anarchist struggles. What also stands them apart is their commitment to free love, which sought to divorce love from the law and marry it to the heart alone. Twentieth-century bohemians breathed new life into free love ideology …

  • Amy K. DeFalco Lippert. Consuming Identities

    Open Access•Susan Lee Johnson•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

In Consuming Identities: Visual Culture in Nineteenth-Century San Francisco, Amy K. DeFalco Lippert argues convincingly that San Francisco stood in the vanguard of a new nineteenth-century visual culture centered on lithography, photography, and visual spectacles as diverse as tableaux vivants, panoramas, and minstrel shows. The contention that California’s gold rush metropolis proved such a fertile ground for the development of these cultural fo…

  • Nail This To Your Door

    Susan Lee Johnson•ARTICLE•Pacific Historical Review•2010

Scholars of the North American West have not realized the promise of gender and women's history for the field. Many of the best recent books, articles, documentary films, and museum exhibits slight the insights of gender history, except in the inclusion of occasional female actors who are made to parade under the sign of gender. This essay borrows the form of Martin Luther's famous "Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences" (also know…

  • American Alchemy

Susan Lee Johnson, Brian Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002•Cited by: 2

American Alchemy is a welcome addition to work on the California gold rush and on nineteenth-century white, middle-class culture. Brian Roberts provides rich literary analysis of letters and diaries written primarily by women who stayed in the East and men who ventured to the West. California, Roberts argues, seemed as if it might offer middle-class white men a respite from the world of competition, hierarchy, and social rigidity that, for them, …
