Entering medicine “on the wrong side”? Caregiving as a legitimate pathway to medicine
Medical education has increasingly incorporated curricular reforms and programming aimed at humanizing care, such as community-based service learning, experiential education, and structural competency training. However, such efforts often overlook the fact that many students already possess deep, embodied knowledge of these social realities. Whose Authority Drives the Narrative
Climate change is facilitating the expansion of biorisks (invasive species, viruses, diseases) into new environments. While news media are a key site where expert authorities communicate about risks in the public sphere, there is limited understanding of how media narratives change as biorisks spread into new areas. We use mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) in Canada as a case study to examine how narratives in media coverage evolved …
A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis of the development of turn taking in adult–child vocal interactions
Fluent conversation requires temporal organization between conversational exchanges. By performing a systematic review and Bayesian multi-level meta-analysis, we map the trajectory of infants’ turn-taking abilities over the course of early development (0 to 70 months). We synthesize the evidence from 26 studies (78 estimates from 429 unique infants, of which at least 152 are female) reporting response latencies in infant–adult dyadic interactions…
Learning from Elders about Autonomy, Meaningfulness, and Relationships
In this essay, we appeal to conceptual and empirical research to establish that autonomy and meaningfulness, when understood concretely and realistically, remain possible for frail and dependent elders. Contrary to ageist cultural attitudes, relationships render frailty and dependence compatible with the exercise of autonomous agency and with a life of meaning. This conclusion is important not only for the goal of supporting frail elders but also…
