  • Personal Jesus

    Open Access•J Lenore Wright, Andrew E Arterbury•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•References: 2

This essay argues that contemporary conceptions of "calling" do not properly reckon with the concept's biblical and historical foundations. In popular culture, where celebrities and social media influencers wield power, religious language is often extracted from faith traditions without regard for the tradition's identity or communal nature. Calling, in this manner, has become a cultural catch-phrase devoid of vocational meaning. For many young, …

  • Relationality and Life

    J Lenore Wright•ARTICLE•International Journal of Feminist…•2018

In this essay, I analyze pregnancy loss from a feminist phenomenological perspective. I draw upon relational accounts of personhood wherein a person's status and identity are formed through a lived history and the activity of “calling into personhood” a being a woman may seek to know (a child) or become (a mother—or parent or “Ren”). I draw upon the work of Simone de Beauvoir, who advances a feminist phenomenology that grounds the status and iden…

  • Reading Rembrandt

    J Lenore Wright•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2007

In this essay, I aim to identify and analyze the influence of Cartesian dualism on Rembrandt's pictorial representations of the self. My thesis is that Descartes and Rembrandt share concerns about philosophy's exploration of human nature, concerns rooted in mind–body dualism. Descartes's corpus bears witness to a growing skepticism about the relation between matter and extension. Likewise, Rembrandt's anatomy lessons lead the viewer to question t…

  • Plato's socrates and soseki's sensei

    J Lenore Wright•ARTICLE•Asian Philosophy•2005

Natsume S seki's novel Kokoro (1914) offers an indictment of the loneliness and isolation of a modernized Japan, a Japan in which people ‘feel cut off from every other living thing’. In this essay, I argue that Plato and S seki offer analogous critiques of an eradicated honor culture; an eradication that is rooted in the political exchange of honorific autonomy for honorific heteronomy. Moreover, I suggest that the deprecation and subsequent demi…
