Identification of hidden subtypes in occupational health examinations and their biomedical characteristics using graph-enhanced deep representation learning
Purpose Occupational health examinations have long relied on conventional health classes to assess worker health status. However, individuals within the same examination class may differ substantially in risk sources, pathophysiological background, and potential progression patterns. This study aimed to determine whether stable hidden health subtypes exist beyond conventional occupational health classifications in a large real-world cohort and to…
The Kirk in Retreat
Following the 1688–90 Revolution, the Presbyterian Kirk sought to assert its authority over the British army in Scotland in matters of worship and discipline. However, the multi-confessional composition of the troops, as well as the legal ambiguities of military and ecclesiastical law, complicated these efforts. In particular, the use of Anglican liturgy for English soldiers in Scotland was in line with military laws but contradicted ecclesiastic…
The influence of leisure patterns on the subjective well-being of the floating population—A social integration perspective
This paper uses microdata from the 2017 China Time Use Survey (CTUS) to study the impact of leisure patterns on the subjective well-being of the floating population. We find that latent profile analysis (LPA) divides the leisure time allocation patterns of the Chinese floating population into five types: self-entertainment type, family-friendly type, sports fitness type, social-entertainment type and cultural-artistic type. The empirical results …
Independent Semantic and Syntactic Representations in L2 Mandarin Learners
Structural representations in English have been shown to be quite abstract, with structural information being represented independently from semantic information. Mandarin has a relatively sparse marking of syntactic information, with no inflections for case, number, or tense. Given this syntactic sparsity, Huang et al. (2016) hypothesized that, distinct from English-language findings, Mandarin learners may have shared syntactic and semantic repr…
The Use of Large Language Models for Translating Buddhist Texts from Classical Chinese to Modern English
This study conducts a comprehensive evaluation of large language models (LLMs), including ChatGPT 4, ERNIE Bot 4, and Gemini Advanced, in the context of translating Buddhist texts from classical Chinese to modern English. Focusing on three distinct Buddhist texts encompassing various literary forms and complexities, the analysis examines the models' capabilities in handling specialized Buddhist terminology, classical Chinese grammar, and the tran…
Outbound vs. domestic travel expenditure
Traditional theories of consumer economy suggest that outbound tourism expenditure may inhibit domestic tourism expenditure. However, little is known about whether the effect really exists. This study applied Thaler’s Mental Accounting Theory and the Family Utility Function Model to test the relationship between domestic and outbound tourism expenditure using a sample of 1,147 Chinese travelers. The study suggests that outbound tourism expenditur…
A self-control theory perspective on tourists’ short-vacation preference
Based on a nationwide survey, it is proposed that short-vacation preference exists in the Chinese domestic tourist market. Introducing self-control theory from behavioral economics, this study constructed a conceptual framework and conducted an empirical exploration to identify the economic effect of different types of holiday vacations. It verified that domestic Chinese tourists usually spend more on short vacations to avoid excessive spending i…

How Does Leisure Time Affect Production Efficiency? Evidence from China, Japan, and the US
Leisure in Urban China
This paper examines national-level leisure time availability and participation patterns among urban residents of China. The findings show that Mainland Chinese enjoy relatively little leisure time and that strong contrasts exist in regional distribution of free time availability. People of all ages, genders, and incomes show a general preference for passive/media and other home-based activities while displaying low participation rates in exercise…
Leisure Time, Leisure Activities, and Happiness in China
This study utilized a nation-wide survey (n=73,622) to examine the associations of leisure time, leisure activities, and demographics with happiness among residents in China. Ordered logit regression analyses indicated that leisure time was positively associated with happiness. While passive leisure activities (e.g., watching TV, Internet surfing) were found to contribute to happiness, active leisure activities (e.g., exercising, socializing, and…
