    Open Access•Gabriela Okundaye, John Ishiyama et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 45

Introduction In this paper, we examine how premigratory experiences shape the willingness of immigrants to engage with the political system of the host country. Methods Using the Immigrant Citizens’ Survey, a study of over 6600 immigrants in six European countries, and building upon previous work we test whether an immigrant who comes from an authoritarian country and/or a country that has experienced significant civil conflict, will affect the e…

  • The Effect of Intergovernmental Policy Conflict on Immigrants’ Behavior

Open Access•T K Wong, Karina Shklyan et al.•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•2021•References: 62

As Congress remains gridlocked on the issue of comprehensive immigration reform, immigration policy debates, particularly with respect to interior immigration enforcement, are increasingly taking place at state and local levels. Scholarship on immigration federalism has focused on federal and local governments, while states are passing laws that tighten or delimit cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (i.e., “sanctuary policies”). …

  • Explaining the American crisis of policing

    Open Access•Andrea Silva, Diego Esparza•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 25

Objective To include the factor of police malfeasance in the crisis of confidence in American police. Further, to explain the role of race, media, and contextual factors on individual perception of police performance. We argue that while the BLM movement was amplified by the deaths of Black people at the hands of police, it originates from the reality that police are continuously engaged in nefarious activities that wear down communities of color…

  • A viola na sociedade oitocentista carioca e o baixo contínuo

    Open Access•Luciana Souza, Andrea Silva•ARTICLE•Revista Vórtex•2020

Destacam-se na análise sociocultural o conflito …

  • Perceived police performance, racial experiences, and trust in local government

Andrea Silva, Diego Esparza et al.•ARTICLE•Politics Groups and Identities•2020•Cited by: 8•References: 40

Given the continued revelation of police abuses of racial-ethnic minorities in America, it is of the utmost importance for scholars to focus on questions of how police conduct is related to minority political behavior, in particular their trust in local government. In this paper, we find evidence that both egotropic and sociotropic insecurity and experiences with police have a significant correlation with confidence in local government. The effec…

  • Emancipatory pedagogies

Lisa Garcia Bedolla, Andrea Silva•ARTICLE•Politics Groups and Identities•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Every electoral cycle, thousands of canvassers knock on doors to encourage strangers to vote. Many volunteers come from communities with low levels of participation. Scholars have yet to explore how community organizations recruit and sustain their canvassing teams. This article explores that process using an in-depth study of canvasser training and administration by two grassroots community organizations in California in November 2014. We argue …

  • Unpacking the Suitcase

    Open Access•John Ishiyama, Andrea Silva•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 62

Objective Do premigratory experiences shape the perceived need for racial and/or ethnic political representation? Although there is much literature that has examined whether a “pan‐ethnic” Asian‐American identity is emerging, we test the effects of premigration experiences with ethnic violence on the perceived need for descriptive representation among Asian Americans. Methods Using the 2016 National Asian American Pre‐Election Survey, in combinat…

  • People of Color, People of Faith

    Open Access•Kiku Huckle, Andrea Silva•ARTICLE•Religions•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 72

U.S. immigration policy over the last 100 years has changed the onus of political acculturation from public programs to private groups like churches. After this significant policy change, how do religion, social capital, and nativity intersect in the political mobilization of racial minorities? Furthermore, after the 1965 Hart-Celler Act, the country of origin of immigrants shifted from European countries to Latin America and Asia. Scholars have …

  • Always Running

    Open Access•Andrea Silva, Carrie Skulley•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2019•Cited by: 40•References: 75

The number of women seeking congressional office in the United States has dramatically increased since 1980. Previous research on women candidates explores why women run, but new research on candidate emergence shows that women face different challenges and advantages based on their race and ethnicity. We investigate these differences by disaggregating data on women’s candidate emergence by race and ethnicity to examine how these theories work wh…

Esta é a questão norteadora deste artigo, que busca problematizar o papel do trab…

Concluo que o discurso da CEPAL pode ser considerado tanto como uma esp…

  • Majority rule vs. minority rights

Carrie Skulley, Andrea Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Politics Groups and Identities•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 26

What explains legislators’ behavior when they are uncertain whether they will be rewarded or punished at re-election? Typically, politicians are incentivized to deliver policies preferred by the majority. Less well understood is what happens when legislators face decisions on issues on which their traditional supporters disagree. Owing to the unavailability of public opinion data for congressional districts, however, studies evaluating competing …

A systematic method is presented whereby material from a full course of psychoanalytic treatment is analyzed to assess changes and identify patterns of change. Through an analysis of session notes, changes were assessed using the CHange After Psychotherapy scales (CHAP; Sandell 1987a), which evaluate changes in five rating variables (symptoms, adaptive capacity, insight, basic conflicts, and extratherapeutic factors).
