  • The Parchment of High Medieval Italian Codices

Anna di Majo, Carlo Federici et al.•ARTICLE•Art In Translation•2023

When examining parchment, it can be difficult to determine the animal species from which a skin was obtained. In order to develop a reliable and non-invasive method of identification, Anna Di Majo, Carlo Federici, and Marco Palma studied hair follicles in parchment from medieval Italian manuscripts. Using microscopes and transmitted light from heat-free optical fibers, they analyzed the entire follicular structure of each sheet. They compared the…

  • Regulatory and HTA early dialogues in medical devices

Open Access•Carl Rudolf Blankart, Florian Dams et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2021

INTRODUCTION: Specific guidance and examples for health technology assessment (HTA) of medical devices are scarce in medical device development. A more intense dialogue of competent authorities, HTA agencies, and manufactures may improve evidence base on clinical and cost-effectiveness. Especially as the new Medical Device Regulation requires more clinical evidence. METHODS: We explore the perceptions of manufacturers, competent authorities, and …

  • Establishing a national HTA program for medical devices in Italy

Open Access•Heidrun Moschitz, Rosanna Tarricone et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2021

Differing contexts have greatly influenced HTA development in various countries, with considerable effort recently made by international HTA networks (e.g., EUnetHTA) and the European Union (EU) to make HTA a more coherent, equal, and efficient process. Medical devices (MDs) present particular challenges for HTA because of frequent, rapid innovation, outcomes influenced by end-user competence, dynamic pricing and often low-quality scientific evid…

  • Characterization of Pigment and Binder in Badly Conserved Illuminations of a 15th‐Century Manuscript

Open Access•Alfonso Zoleo, Luca Nodari et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 23

In this work we report a pre‐restoration spectroscopic study by a multi‐technique approach on the green pigment and the binder used in illuminations in a codex of the late 15th century. Our analysis aimed to characterize the badly deteriorated parts of the codex, mainly the green parts, by electron paramagnetic resonance ( EPR ), X ‐ray diffraction ( XRD ), X ‐ray fluorescence ( XRF ) and infrared spectroscopy ( ATR‐IR ). We will show that a comb…

  • Electron Spin Resonance Study of Paper Samples Dating From the Fifteenth to the Eighteenth Century

Open Access•Donato Attanasio, Donatella Capitani et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to detect paramagnetic impurities in differently degraded antique sheets of unprinted paper. Impurities consist primarily of transition metal ions (Fe 3+ , Mn 2+ , Cu 2+ ) present in different environments and symmetries. Organic radicals, common in modern, wood pulp paper, are absent in these antique samples made from rags. Fe 3+ is the largest impurity (from 300 to 700 ppm). Mn 2+ is also pre…
