  • The North Korean Card in Us-China Relations

Norbert Faragó, Niv Farago et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Affairs•2021•Cited by: 1

For two decades, successive US administrations have overplayed the importance of pressure tactics and Chinese support for denuclearizing North Korea. However, the continued development of North Korea's nuclear and missile programs reflects not only gridlock in US-North Korea relations, but also Pyongyang's growing suspicions over China's commitment to the Kim regime. By supporting and enforcing tougher sanctions, Beijing has only reinforced North…

  • News Medium, News, Objectivity — Ontological Questions in Journalism

    John C Merrill•ARTICLE•Ecquid Novi African Journalism…•1984

Often the most obvious questions concerning the nature of journalism are ignored: the metaphysical “why” is seldom investigated. One such question concerns the news media: is a medium which is not solely concerned with news, a news medium? What is the purpose of these media? Why is news as such important? The function of news in society e.g. as a source of information is discussed. The negative side of news is also afforded attention. News not on…

  • The New World Information debate

    John C Merrill•ARTICLE•Ecquid Novi African Journalism…•1982

Three compelling needs concerning the international forum are discussed: the need for international semantic sophistication the need for Third World self-assurance and the need for more research and less empty rhetoric As far as the semantic aspect is concerned, there is no doubt that anti-Western forces in the world communications arena are winning the struggle against the West, and are enticing so-called “non-aligned” people into their ideologi…

  • Beliefs, Values, and Reality

    Open Access•Mervin D Lynch, John C Merrill•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•1968

A probabilistic model is presented which may be applied to perform content analysis on the computer. The procedure employs word stems as category entries and probabilities rather than units for allocating and enumerating content among categories. An application of the model was made to compare content coverage in monopoly and competitive newspapers. There was no appreciable difference due to interaction among monopoly and competitive paper types …
