Mobile Payments and Households’ Over-indebtedness: Micro Evidence Based on Subjective and Objective Perspectives
With the rapid rise of mobile payment services in China, its welfare effect on residents has attracted wide attention from all sectors of society, but little is known about its negative consequences. Using panel data from the China Household Finance Survey in 2017, 2019, and 2021, and based on both subjective and objective perspectives, this study aimed to empirically analyze the impact of mobile payment usage on household over-indebtedness risk,…

The Evolving Role of State-Owned Enterprises in China’s Economic Stabilization
State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China have been pivotal in economic stabilization, transitioning from primary executors of economic plans to facilitators of temporary economic mobilization, counter-cyclical investments, and strategic investments aligned with national interests. This stabilization role, shaped by major social relations (the state–SOEs relation, the SOE management–worker relation, and the SOEs–private enterprises relation) in dif…

Riding out the Storm: How State-Owned Enterprises in China Fought the Covid Crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted economic and social activities worldwide, exposing and exacerbating inherent flaws in the capitalist system. The pandemic’s devastating impact highlights the need for the state and its institutional agencies to actively intervene in public health crises and mitigate the economic damage they cause. This article situates the effectiveness and contribution of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the context of the COVID …
Cross-Boundary Subsumption: Toward a Political Economy of Platform Labor
The existing body of research on the platform economy provides a variety of interpretations of platform labor. Nevertheless, current studies have either placed exchange rather than production at the core of their interpretations or overlooked the historical continuity of the type of labor to which platform labor belongs. Employing a historical-comparative approach, this article introduces the concept of “cross-boundary subsumption” to illuminate …
The Profitability Puzzle of Digital Labor Platforms
By examining digital labor platforms that connect customers with gig workers, we attempt to solve the puzzle concerning why these labor platforms, such as ride-hailing companies and food delivery companies, continue to suffer weak profitability even though they promise a more efficient way to mobilize and utilize the platform’s labor force. Stylized facts on the profitability of the top ten global labor platforms and a descriptive analysis of the…
Control of the Platform Reserve Army: The Roles of the State and Capital in China's Platform Economy
The rise of digital platforms has formed a platform reserve army. The platform reserve army is the stagnant reserve army of contemporary digital capitalism, which brings challenges to labor control. Using data collected from an original survey of over 600 ride-hailing drivers in two Chinese cities, the roles of the state and capital, as well as their interactions in shaping capital's control over the platform reserve army in China, are clarified.…
Giovanni Arrighi in Beijing: Rethinking the Transformation of the Labor Supply in Rural China during the Reform Era
A Marxian political economy perspective is essential to analysis of the transformation of rural labor forces into capitalist wage labor in China during the reform era. Orthodox theory depicts this transformation as a market-driven process in which the state played a passive role. Following Giovanni Arrighi's seminal 1970 article, we seek to show that the transformation of labor supply and the formation of an industrial reserve army is a historica…
Measuring smartphone usage and task switching with log tracking and self-reports
Smartphones offer multimedia convergence in a single device, ubiquitous access to media, and constant connections with others. The rapid rise of smartphone use calls for more scholarly attention paid to users’ media usage and time expenditure. This study aims to (a) understand smartphone usage patterns by examining time spent using smartphones and task switching between mobile applications (apps), and (b) test the validity of self-reported measur…
The Historical Peak of the Rate of Surplus Value and the "New Normal" of the Chinese Economy: A Political Economy Analysis
This paper reports homogenous series of the rate of surplus value for the Chinese economy over the period 1956-2015 with a Marxian approach. It finds that the rate of surplus value reached the historical peak of the whole period in 2008 and that the high profitability in the decade before the 2008 crisis had relied on the continuous growth in the rate of surplus value. It provides a time series analysis to show that the rising wage pressure and v…
The Labor Share Question in China
In the past two decades, China's economic growth has been increasingly dependent on investment. To maintain the growth of investment, China must sustain a fairly high rate of profit, and the fall in labor's share has been seen as a crucial factor to sustain profitability.... Although the mainstream economists have widely admitted there is a downward trend for labor's share in China, they explain this trend with a story that has nothing to do with…
