The Companions of the Underworld : Xolotl and the God of the Number Zero Two Mesoamerican gods, coming from different cultures, show many common aspects. The former, Xolotl, is particularly well represented in the Aztec civilization at the Post-classic period. The latter, the God of the Number Zero, is originated from the Maya culture at the Classic period. Both are related to the underworld ; they preside over the ballgame and the sacrificial de…

  • The Nahuatl Myth of the Creation of Humankind

    Open Access•Jean-Claude Delhalle, Albert Luykx•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1986•References: 1

Two engravings from the Gulf Coast seem to refer the origin of humankind to the Fifth Sun; consequently they raise again the hypothesis of the eastern position of Tamoanchan. This sacred place, at once mythical and historical, was the home of the gods; the cradle of humanity, the point of departure of the great ancestors from the Gulf (the Olmecs); it was also the paradise lost. One of these pictures predates the Nahuatl culture, and, hence, may …

  • L'oracle d'Oxtotitlan
