  • Cost-Effective Recruitment Strategies That Attract Underrepresented Minority Undergraduates Who Persist to STEM Doctorates

    Open Access•Cherilynn R Shadding, Dawayne Whittington et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2016•References: 15

The paucity of underrepresented minorities (URMs) earning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees remains an issue in revitalizing the U.S. biomedical workforce. Due to reductions in federal funding, maintaining the integrity of programs that focus on URM retention and recruitment is crucial. We present data on the mechanisms used to recruit URM students to our program (e.g., email, events, referrals, website), which indi…

  • A global reference for human genetic variation

Open Access•Corresponding authors, Adam Auton et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized…

  • Great ape genetic diversity and population history

    Open Access•Javier Prado-Martinez, Peter H Sudmant et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2013

High-coverage sequencing of 79 (wild and captive) individuals representing all six non-human great ape species has identified over 88 million single nucleotide polymorphisms providing insight into ape genetic variation and evolutionary history and enabling comparison with human genetic diversity. In an effort to provide insights into great ape genetic variation, the authors sequence 79 wild- and captive-born individuals from across all six great …

  • The International HapMap Project

    Open Access•Richard A Gibbs, John W Belmont et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2003

The goal of the International HapMap Project is to determine the common patterns of DNA sequence variation in the human genome and to make this information freely available in the public domain. An international consortium is developing a map of these patterns across the genome by determining the genotypes of one million or more sequence variants, their frequencies and the degree of association between them, in DNA samples from populations with a…

  • Initial sequencing and analysis of the human genome

Open Access•Lauren Linton, Bruce W Birren et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2001

The human genome holds an extraordinary trove of information about human development, physiology, medicine and evolution. Here we report the results of an international collaboration to produce and make freely available a draft sequence of the human genome. We also present an initial analysis of the data, describing some of the insights that can be gleaned from the sequence.
