An Academy of Nations? The enduring Eurocentrism of the Best International Feature Film Award
Although the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film is often promoted as a celebration of world cinema, its record tells a different story. By mapping every nomination and win since the category adopted a competitive format in 1956, this study exposes a sharp geographic imbalance. A proportional-symbol cartogram shows Europe ballooning to dominate the visual field, while much of the Global South, especially Africa, nearly disappears. F…
Scotland’s twin referendums
Scotland’s 2014 independence referendum and the 2016 EU referendum are often interpreted as politically aligned at the national scale, reinforcing a simplified narrative of a strongly pro-independence, pro-EU portion of the Scottish electorate. This regional graphic challenges that view using a bivariate, population-weighted cartogram that jointly visualises both votes across parliamentary constituencies. By correcting for uneven population distr…
Shaping Sustainable Futures on T ik T ok? Media Literacy, Youth Education and the SDG s
Social media platforms such as TikTok, Bilibili and YouTube increasingly shape how young people perceive, imagine and enact sustainable lifestyles. From ‘low‐carbon challenges’ to short documentaries, sustainability has become as much a mediated spectacle as an educational practice. This Perspective examines how these platforms simultaneously open new spaces for engagement while reproducing risks of greenwashing, consumerist spectacle and algorit…
Construction enthusiasts versus demolition giants
This study uses building footprint data from the Ordnance Survey MasterMap to analyze construction and demolition activities across England from 2017 to 2023. By comparing the Topographic Object Identifiers (TOIDs) of each building between years, we identified newly constructed and demolished buildings, quantified changes, and used the bivariate color maps to visualize spatial patterns across England and within its five major cities. The study hi…
Where England's cities are growing
Urban development is shaped by demographic and socio-economic factors, while simultaneously influencing these dynamics. Understanding these complex relationships is essential for informed urban planning, yet previous research has struggled with fine-scale analysis over large areas due to data and methodological limitations. This study overcomes these challenges by leveraging high-resolution building footprint data and eXplainable AI (XAI). Focusi…
VAT Reform, Regional Ownership Structure, and Industrial Upgrading
We estimate the extent of the moderating effect of varying regional ownership structures on the relationship between the VAT reform and industrial upgrading in a panel differences-in-differences framework, using a natural experiment of the China's 2004 value-added tax (VAT) reform pilot that introduces a permanent 17%-tax credit for fixed investment in six industries in the North-eastern regions. Results reveal that the VAT reform helps firms inc…
