Flowers for Algernon
This article examines the intersection of disability and animality in Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon (1966) and it contributes to emerging discussions in critical disability and animal studies. By analyzing the intertwined experiences of Charlie and Algernon, the novel highlights the shared oppressions faced by disabled people and animals; it also challenges the flawed perception of both groups as lacking. The article further explores their …

Antarctic Expedition and Geological Agency: A Posthumanist Reading of “At the Mountains of Madness
H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937), an American fantastic and weird fiction writer, is regarded as “one of the greatest [writers] of the twentieth century” (Harman 3). “At the Mountains of Madness”, one o
A Posthumanist Reading of the Voyage in “The White Ship
This article proposes a posthumanist reading of the voyage in Lovecraft’s short story “The White Ship.” The lighthouse symbolizes anthropocentrism, but the nautical voyage, as a narrative disruption, dismantles the monopoly of anthropocentrism, and inserts the narrator into a posthumanist world. Instead of being a silent backdrop, the ocean becomes a portal to these unknown territories, and reveals itself as an agent of unpredictable forces. The …
Implementing the Icope program amongst community-dwelling older adults in Singapore: A multistage implementation study protocol
Background: The global population of older adults has significantly increased in recent years, presenting substantial public health challenges. This demographic shift underscores the necessity for effective interventions such as the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework, which aims to preserve functional ability and intrinsic capacity. While ICOPE has been implemented and evaluated primarily by clinical practitioners, demonstrating i…
Identification of Systemic Drug Targets for Anti-cavernous Fibrosis in the Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction, Guided by Genome-Wide Mendelian Randomization
The treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) remains a significant challenge. Mendelian randomization (MR) is being increasingly utilized to identify novel therapeutic targets. In this study, we carried out a genome-wide MR analysis on druggable targets with the aim of pinpointing latent therapeutic alternatives for ED. We collected data on the druggable genes and filtered out those associated with blood eQTLs, then performed two-sample MR and colo…
A Posthumanist Reading of Herman Melville’s “The Encantadas; or Enchanted Isles”
The narrator in Herman Melville’s “The Encantadas; or Enchanted Isles” leads the reader to a posthumanist world where human beings are no longer in a dominant position while nonhuman beings gain their agency. The exotic isles challenge the anthropocentric sense of temporality and defy the validity of human knowledge. The descent of anthropocentrism is accompanied by the ascent of posthumanism, which undermines the human sense of mastery through o…
Sustaining the adequacy and competency of CDC Staff in China after Covid-19
We examine the significant increase in staffing at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) following the COVID-19 pandemic and compare it to the staffing changes post-2003 SARS outbreak. This analysis views the surge not only as compensation for long-term understaffing, but also as a response to the immediate demands of the COVID-19 crisis. We explore the implications of this increase, addressing the financial burden it impose…

The actor-network in Herman Melville's 'The Apple-Tree Table
This article focuses on the actor-network in Herman Melville’s ‘The Apple-Tree Table or Original Spiritual Manifestations’ and argues that the agency of the nonhuman helps human beings to reshape their recognition of the world. In the story, when the narrator comes to the garret which is dominated by animals and things, he encounters a nonhuman-centred world. The movement of the apple-tree table from the garret to the parlour guides the family to…

The Philosophy of Eating in “Bon-bon”
The culinary discussions in “Bon-Bon” reveal Edgar Allan Poe’s philosophical contemplation on writing. Epicurus, the master of eating, concretizes the idealized writing process: the consumption of fresh ideas, the assimilation of intellectual substance, and the production of a new book. Furthermore, like human metabolism, writing processes must remain smooth and unobstructed so that an author can produce a “changing book” to reflect an on-going w…
A Posthumanist Reading of Geological Agency in “The Domain of Arnheim”
This article proposes a posthumanist reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s story of “The Domain of Arnheim” and argues that posthumanism redefines the narrator’s sense of attachment to the shared world. The first part of the article compares two styles of landscape-gardening and the preference of the posthumanist model over the anthropocentric model implies the narrator’s endeavor to build a new relationship with the environment in which multiple species …

The importance of transcultural competence in GPHAC is becoming a consensus of public health professionals. Enhanced transcultural competence reflected in the attitude of public health as well as other health workers would promote GPHAC and would foster efficient emergency health response management among many countries
A posthumanist reading of the “happy” fish in The Zhuangzi
This article argues for an alternative interpretation of the happy fish scene in The Zhuangzi: the fish are not happy. The fish undergo an unpleasant experience while the philosophers debate animatedly over the joy of the fish. The dramatization of the fish scene compels us to contemplate anthropocentrism and species communication. Moreover, the contrast between the fish-bird becoming and the subsequent human narrations reinforces the anthropocen…

However, caregiver perspectives on lifestyle change remain largely unexamined. This study compares perspectives among caregivers for those with dementia and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Interviews were conducted with caregivers in two sites …
The Lack of Lack: The Lacanian Androgyny in Pilate
Two lacks overlaps here. The first emerges from the central defect around which the dialectic of the advent of the subject to his own being in the relation to the Other turns—by the fact that the subject depends on the signifier and that the signifier is first of all in the field of the Other. This lack takes up the other lack, which is the real, earlier lack, to be situated at the advent of the living being, that is to say, at sexed reproduction…
Multi-scale Holocene Asian monsoon variability deduced from a twin-stalagmite record in southwestern China
We present two isotopic (δ 18 O and δ 13 C) sequences of a twin-stalagmite from Zhuliuping Cave, southwestern China, with 230 Th dates from 14.6 to 4.6 ka. The stalagmite δ 18 O record characterizes orbital- to decadal-scale variability of Asian summer monsoon (ASM) intensity, with the Holocene optimum period (HOP) between 9.8 and 6.8 ka BP which is reinforced by its co-varying δ 13 C data. The large multi-decadal scale amplitude of the cave δ 18…
Narrative Disruption as Declaration of Dependence: Nonhuman Agency and Narrative Repetition in “Rip van Winkle”
Rip van Winkle’s prolonged slumber atop the Catskills in Washington Irving’s titular story features as a narrative disruption suspending human agency and commencing nonhuman agency. Rip’s narrative repetition is both a declaration of human dependence on an interactive network of cross-species actants and an establishment of anthropocentric mastery over past passivity. The conflict between human reliance and psychological superiority, this article…
Lung Cancer Mortality Trends in China from 1988 to 2013: New Challenges and Opportunities for the Government

Methods : Age-specific rates were collected by gender and region (urban/rural) and analysed with descriptive methods and age-period-cohort models to estimate the trends in lung canc…
Efr3a Insufficiency Attenuates the Degeneration of Spiral Ganglion Neurons after Hair Cell Loss
Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is caused by an irreversible impairment of cochlear hair cells and subsequent progressive degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Eighty-five requiring 3 (Efr3) is a plasma membrane protein conserved from yeast to human, and knockout of Efr3a was reported to facilitate the survival of hippocampal newborn neurons in adult mice. Previously, we found Efr3a expression in the auditory neural pathway is upregul…
Associations among Screen Time and Unhealthy Behaviors, Academic Performance, and Well-Being in Chinese Adolescents

Linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine whether, after adjustment for covariates, screen time wa…
A comparative study of the subject in Jacques Lacan and Zhuangzi
Jacques Lacan has creatively grafted Zhuangzi’s concept of the subject on the Western tradition of Logo-centrism. Lacan rewrites the triangle positions of the subject as the Real, the Imaginary, the Symbolic, expresses them in the vocabulary of detective stories, and achieves his scholarly reputation. The insufficiency of his theory could be redressed by Zhuangzi’s idea of ‘the poetics of oneness.’ For Zhuangzi, a man can forget his ‘Social I’ an…
Chemical speciation of iron in sediments from the Changjiang Estuary and East China Sea: Iron cycle and paleoenvironmental implications
Millennial-scale Asian monsoon variability during the late Marine Isotope Stage 6 from Hulu Cave, China
A precisely 230 Th-dated stalagmite δ 13 C profile from Hulu Cave, China, is presented to characterize the frequency and pattern of millennial-scale Asian monsoon (AM) variability from 160.6 to 132.5 ka. Evidence for an antiphased relationship of the δ 13 C and δ 18 O on the millennial scale suggests that the δ 13 C is indicative of the local hydrological cycle associated with changes in AM strength. Owing to the δ 13 C responding to AM changes m…
Pleasure principle and perfect happiness: Morality in Jacques Lacan and Zhuangzi
Jacques Lacan studied Chinese classics and received much inspiration from Zhuangzi. This paper concentrates on the comparative study of morality in those two thinkers from three connecting levels, namely, nature as the source of ethical codes, reason as the means to arrive at the ethical state, and pleasure as the ultimate purpose of morality. The investigation into the topic is enlightening for posthuman morality. Zhuangzi’s idea of the poetics …

East Asian summer monsoon climates and cave hydrological cycles over Dansgaard-Oeschger events 14 to 11 revealed by a new stalagmite record from Hulu Cave
A 230 Th/U-dated stalagmite from Hulu Cave was analyzed for δ 18 O, δ 13 C, and trace elements. A ~10-yr-resolution δ 18 O record, spanning 51.7–42.6 ka, revealed Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events 14 to 11. A similar rapid transition and synchronous timing of the onset of DO 12 is evident between the Greenland and Hulu Cave records, which suggests a common forcing mechanism of DO cycles in the North Atlantic and monsoonal region of Asia. Centennial-…
A posthumanist reading of loss in Zhuangzi and Jacques Lacan: The missing tally and the lack
This article argues for a posthumanist reading of loss in Zhuangzi and Jacques Lacan. Language separates human beings from the primordial oneness and channels them into the procrustean bed of cultural codes. Zhuangzi defines this severance as ‘loss.’ Likewise, Lacan rewrites ‘loss’ as ‘lack’ within the discourse of logocentrism. Language is both the cause of and the solution to the loss; however, these two thinkers have different understandings o…
A posthumanist reading of knowledge in Zhuangzi and Jacques Lacan
This article proposes a posthumanist reading of knowledge in Zhuangzi and Jacques Lacan from four interconnected aspects. First, knowledge is inseparable from practice, as is exemplified in Lacan’s original rewriting of Zhuangzi’s ‘agreement between name and actuality’ as the dialectic relationship between Other and other. Then, knowledge leads us to explore the mysterious knowledge behind the surface, which resists linguistic expression and defi…

Ethnic Trauma in the Traveller’s Eye: On Naipaul’s "The Masque of Africa", Including a Comparison with Bi Shumin’s "30,000 Miles of Africa"
Insisting on the role of spectator in his travel writing, V.S. Naipaul claims he is merely the “manager of narrative”, who retells objective truths told by the people among whom he travels. Nonetheless, an examination of the ethnic trauma of post-apartheid South Africa in Naipaul’s The Masque of Africa: Glimpses of African Belief (2010) reveals that his voice dominates the narrative. Naipaul’s negative view of post-apartheid South Africa is consi…
A Posthumanist Reading of “The Island of the Fay”

The butterfly transformation and the anamorphosis: A posthumanist reading of gaze in Zhuang Zi and Jacques Lacan
Zhuang Zi has a seminal influence on Jacques Lacan. Seeing enables an observer to penetrate into the nature of the examined thing so that he will have a potential mastery over the observed object. Zhuang Zi encourages us to go beyond human vision and to look at the world from the perspective of the gaze of things. The transition from the eye to the gaze ushers us into a posthumanist world in which multiple species constitute a symbiotic existence…
